March is National Women’s Month, and we have decided to celebrate some our favorite women in metal. Every week during March, we will honor some of the most talented women in the metal and hard rock world.

I remember my very first time listening to ABNORMALITY, and I was so sure that it was and had to be a male vocalist. But then, BOOM! I saw the video for ‘Fabrication Of The Enemy‘ and my jaws just dropped to the ground. As horrifying and terrorizing the video was, Mallika Sundaramurthy could really portray the same with her terrifying growls, that seemed like it spawned from the deepest crypts of hell. It was something of rare occurrence, given my knowledge of women in metal back in the days. I knew it was something I would dig and I instantly fell in love with her vocal abilities, and also ABNORMALITY as a whole.

Today on my edition of Women’s Month spotlight, we shed some much deserved light on the immensely talented, and the gorgeous Mallika Sundaramurthy of technical death metal band, ABNORMALITY from Marlborough, MA. Mallika is undoubtedly one of the best female death metal vocalist in present day scenario, her vocal prowess is colossal, and on any given day she can give the likes of George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher, Glen Benton etc. a run for their money. Don’t let her looks mask you from the fact that she can be vicious, fatal and an absolute killer of an artist. Femme fatale much? Definitely!

Finland’s finest export and homegrown metal stars CHILDREN OF BODOM have good news for all of us. Word is out that the melo-death outfit from Espoo, are currently working on a new album as you read this article. The forthcoming album will be their much anticipated one after 2015’s highly acclaimed,’I Worship Chaos‘. The guys just entered their own Danger Johnny Studio with producer Mikko Karmila to kick off the recordings of their brand new studio album. The upcoming album marks the continuation of their partnership with Mikko Karmila who worked both on ‘I Worship Chaos‘ and 2013’s ‘Halo Of Blood‘.

Atlanta-based Guillotine offers bass-heavy, blackened death/doom metal with heavy doses of groove. Weaved seamlessly into the band’s sound are a unique blend of musical influences such as old school American death metal, Scandinavian black metal, and Southern sludge. Their songs often bounce between slow/doomy evilness to mid-tempo aggression. While typically never delving into super high-velocity thrashing speeds or blast beats, alternately their use of grooving riffs and double-bass rhythms gives Guillotine a signature sound of their own that is equally dark and punishing. The mystery that shrouds any band’s upcoming album, especially of a band that is well versed with diversity in their music, is certainly not nonchalant. I wasn’t aware RIVERS OF NIHIL would be coming up with their third studio effort, ‘Where Owls Know My Name‘ this year until a few weeks back. As soon as the news dawned upon my conscience, I knew I had to request the album for a review, cause I remember their 2015 album, ‘Monarchy‘ had impressed me so much, it left me wanting for more. Fast forward to March 16th, 2018, the Pennsylvania quintet will be dropping their third full length in what could possibly be their best effort and certainly one that will garner itself a place in the top ten album listing by this year’s end.

Releasing on Metal Blade Records this 16th, RIVERS OF NIHIL have set the bar high when it comes to discovering uncharted territories that transcends your musical comfort zone. One of the most recently emerging and forward thinking artist in the metal sphere, the band has always managed to drop jaws with their progressive yet ferocious music. Not to forget, the wide array of experimentation the band has delved in their work, which makes RIVERS OF NIHIL truly an artistically elite band. So, with all the teasing I just did, do I make it look like ‘Where Owls Know My Name‘ easily surpasses what its predecessor achieved? Let’s find out!

Swedish death metal veterans, The Crown return with their tenth full-length studio album, ‘Cobra Speed Venom,’ scheduled for release March 16, 2018 via Metal Blade Records.  Since originally forming in 1990 under the name Crown of Thornes, the band has gone through various metamorphoses but once again manage to bring their unique rock n’ roll attitude and sensibility to their sound which is, without a doubt, unabashedly and unapologetically “metal.”  By incorporating the aggressive and speedier elements of thrash, the brutality of old school American and Swedish death metal, and the groove and inhibition of arena rock; The Crown takes a refreshing approach to their own distinctive brand of death metal.  There is virtually zero pretense to be heard and it’s clear while listening to this album that the group is actually having fun playing music the way they want to.  As highly skilled and experienced musicians with an impressive discography to prove it, they deliver an amazingly powerful thirteen-track, hour-long annihilator of a record that will immediately satisfy and impress metal fans ranging anywhere from the casual to the über elite.   Continue reading →

Death metal lives on from Brattleboro, Vermont as BARISHI continue their way up in the metal world.
