Life is a short span of time for each of us. Things go up and things come down. There are moments of strife that we can’t seem to see the end of and times of pure joy that we hope will never end. There are tragic times that we can never forget like the assassination of J.F.K, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, 9/11 and the like; and quiet, personal times like getting married, the birth of a child and loss of someone close to us that shake and shape who we are and what we become. For many of us, music has been our catharsis through the thick and thin of life. The one thing that can raise our spirits or give us something to relate to. Something that makes us know that we are not the only ones experiencing what life throws our way. To us, music is heart-felt and soul mining.

PhD in Heavy Metal Music: Australian University

The University of Newcastle, Australia, has always been an attractive place for young Aussies to study. With the announcement that it would offer a PhD program in heavy metal, it became cooler than ever. This is one of the best universities in the country, which consistently ranks among the top 10. To get such recognition for heavy metal music is awesome, but expected as well.

The problem with this genre is that it rarely gains recognition among scholars. People want to learn more about it. There are many passionate musicians who would love to study heavy metal from an academic point of view. But so far, they haven’t had such a chance.

The PhD program at the University of Newcastle will be supported by a scholarship, and it will be available for two domestic and one international candidate.

This is a highly challenging program. The candidates have to be ready to approach heavy metal music with a studious and serious attitude. They will have to write a research proposal and an actual PhD dissertation. But hey; at least the topic will be fun and they will be required to listen to music while writing.

About the Program

Professor Simon Springer is the person in charge of the program, which will be conducted under the direction of the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies. This Centre is committed to research on complex political, cultural, social, economic, and environmental policies and relations that transform regions and cities.

The scholarship program is not specifically focused on heavy metal music. It’s open to those who want to study the “Geographies of Homelessness, Veganism, Unschooling, or Heavy Metal Music.” We’ll have to admit: all these niches sound cool, but who could resist studying heavy metal at university?
The deadline for applications is 15 August 2019. You better hurry up! The successful scholars will start their studies between 01 January 2020 and 31 August 2020.

Two domestic students will receive an annual living allowance of $27,596. The scholarship for one international student will also cover the cost of tuition fees (that’s not necessary for domestic Aussie students, since the Research Training Program covers their tuition).

The course will be mostly focused on the geography of heavy metal. As a global music phenomenon, the genre and its subgenres represent unique subcultures and unique scenes. Australia, despite its distance from the geographical heart of the culture, has deep connections with the countries it originated from.

The researchers who gain this scholarship will focus on exploring the relationship between Australian heavy metal and colonialism, the lyrical themes in Aussie metal bands, the cultural diversity within the heavy metal scene, gender issues, and many other concepts that turn the genre into something worthy of academic research.

How Do You Qualify?

This is the hard part. You need at least a BA Honours degree to apply for the program. The candidates with an MA degree in Geography or a related field will have a priority during the selection process. The related fields include Political Science, Media Studies, International Studies, Sociology, etc. To apply for the program, you need to send your CV and a research proposal to Professor Simon Springer’s email.

Since the application deadline is coming close, you might consider the option to ask for proposal writing help. Giving up is not an option when the opportunity is so attractive. If you collaborate with a professional writer, researcher or editor, you might have that proposal done on time. It’s just a preliminary project that would set the track of your PhD dissertation.

Are You Interested?

Heavy metal music doesn’t get too much recognition in the stiff world of academic studies. They are focused on classical music and modern sounds that appeal to the general masses. We’re finally seeing a reputable university offering a great program that would advance the research and knowledge in this field. This PhD program will help us understand the origins of metal music, and the way the Australian subculture is influenced by colonialism and other factors.

If you’re ready to approach the genre with such a studious mindset, you might be the perfect candidate for the program. It’s a scholarship offer, so the least you could do is try.

Review: INSANITY ALERT – ‘666-Pack’ [Official Video + Tracks Streaming]

Austrian crossover thrashers Insanity Alert will release their new full-length, ‘666-Pack’, on January 25th via Season Of Mist. “Forged in Innsbruck in 2011 and influenced by the likes of S.O.D., D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, Nuclear Assault, Bones Brigade, Municipal Waste, and Toxic Holocaust, Insanity Alert are the kind of people who know what to bring to a party: a big dose of humor with a dash of darkness, party tunes, and a six pack. It’s these ingredients that make up the basis of the band’s third full-length. A relentless, twenty-one-track ripper, ‘666-Pack’ brings the classic spirit of speed metal’s salad days back with savage metal precision. Ultra-catchy riffs, vicious vocals, and empowering gang vocals are packed into short, sharp rapid-fire attacks delivering everything great about thrash in spades.” ‘666-Pack’ was produced and mixed by Toni Meloni Loitsch (Die Toten Hosen, Silbermond, H-Blockx) at Nautilus Sounds Studio, mastered by Dan Randall (Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, Ghoul, Cannabis Corpse) at Mammoth Sound Mastering and comes wrapped in the gruesome cover creation of Mark Riddick (Rotting Christ, Horrendous, Revocation, etc.). NE OBLIVISCARIS Recruits Permanent New Bassist Martino Garattoni

Australian progressive metal masters are riding high on their recent success of the all new album ‘Urn‘ which was released last October. It was my number one album if I had to make a list of best albums of 2017. Anyways, what else is new in the NeO camp? Well, NE OBLIVISCARIS has welcomed a new recruit to the fold, Martino Garattoni, who will fill in as the new bassist, after the band slammed the door on their former bassist Brendan “Cygnus” Brown, over allegations of domestic violence, last year.

Review: HARLOTT – ‘Extinction’ [Song Stream]

Sounding like something straight out of the 80s thrash era, Melbourne band Harlott have produced yet another incredible record. There are not many thrash bands in any era of the genre that match up with the ferocity that these guys bring. There is no mixing in different genres, it’s just straight in-your-face, kick ass speed/thrash metal! The band formed in 2006 and has released 2 EPs and 2 full length albums aside from this new album. Harlott began writing for ‘Extinction’ last year in 2016 after coming off a tour with Annihilation in Europe. The end result is yet another contender for album of the year as the superfluous amount of shredding fills your ears. Prepare for 51 minutes of intrepid, ravishing heavy pleasure. ‘Extinction’ is Harlott‘s third studio album and was recorded at Monolith Studios and mastered by the legendary Jens Bogren (Opeth, Paradise Lost, Sepultura). The record drops this week on April 7th via Metal Blade Records and you can pre-order it here. Continue reading

Robb Flynn of Machine Head Has A New Hero…..

Robb Flynn lead singer for one of heavy metals finest bands Machine Head are currently in Australia. The last date of the sold out “An Evening With” tour in Australia ended last night in Perth. After Robb’s flight from Adelaide to Perth he noticed he no longer had his phone. As we all know your cell phone especially when abroad is a life line. It’s your email, social media, gps, well you get the point, it’s everything.

Robb explained what happened via Instagram:

I left my phone on the flight from Adelaide to Perth yesterday, AGH!! I discovered it missing when we got to the hotel. FUUUUCK!! Thanks to “Find My iPhone” app I was able to track it back to the airport. My TM and I went back re-traced my steps around the coffee shop, bathroom, everywhere I went after I got off the plane, but mysteriously, my phone kept saying it was out on the tarmac. We learned from when someone broke into our dressing room and stole Dave’s iPhone (and eventually got back from thief) that the app s not 100% accurate but pretty damn close. So I took it all with a grain of salt. Eventually we found the dude below, and this guy went way, way, WAY above and beyond the call of duty looking for the phone out on the tarmac, which was a restricted area that we couldn’t go to. He kept coming back saying there was nothing out there, that it had to be wrong, and after 2 hours I was ready to give up, and resign myself to buying a new phone because let’s face it, in this day and age, EVERYTHING goes through your iPhone! He went back one more time, and miraculously, he found the phone!! He kept pinging it with the “play sound” feature (which sets off a ringtone), and where did he find it? Not on the plane, oh no… it was under a fence, in the outside area of the tarmac!!?? Apparently some Qantas Airlines employee in charge of cleaning the planes had found it and rather than turn it into lost & found, stashed it to take home, in hopes I’d forget it or something. Regardless, for the unbelievable amount of effort Mr. Scott Macander put into helping me out, this guy is getting a “DUDE’S A HERO” moniker!!! He stayed an hour after work to keep looking for it, and help a complete stranger, and that was after he’d worked from 4 AM to 4PM! I’m so damn inspired by this guy!! An average person / stranger who helps us out for no reason in particular other than just being a rad person. I tell ya man, in a world where everyone is often too busy helping themselves, and in a fat ass hurry to get on with their own lives, this guy did the opposite, am I grateful he did!!

Hero of the day is Scott Macander!
