State Of The Art: Mississippi’s COSMIC ATROPHY [Album Stream]

*This is part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state. This month’s state is Mississippi.*

Taking technical death metal to otherworldly and demented limits is Biloxi, Mississippi’s Cosmic Atrophy. After a ten-year hiatus since releasing their debut ‘Codex Incubo,’ they returned last November with their latest full-length album, ‘The Void Engineers.’ The nine-track offering is an homage to 1950s-1970s pulp horror soundtracks with a Lovecraftian twist. In addition to its crushing riffage, the album features creatively inventive synth work, inspired by early German synth pioneers that add to its atmosphere of horrific alien experimentation and technological terror – a theme that is captured perfectly within the album’s cover artwork. State Of The Art: BREEDING FILTH [Album Stream]

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state.*

This month’s state is Indiana!

Welcome back to another edition of State of the Art and today I go full tech death on you all. In a world where repetitive music is the orgasm for the masses, technical death metal turns that around viciously and sets an extreme example of high end, ground breaking musical dexterity. Taking on the same spirit and motive from Lafayette, Indiana, ruthless, brutal tech death group BREEDING FILTH, are our State Of The Art band this week. Formed in 2014, this ferocious quartet reek of intense and pretty technical riffs, pummeling drumming, low end thundering bass and nasty, dirty guttural vocals. All of these work in unison to produce the beast that BREEDING FILTH truly embodies, which has helped the band in reaching out to the masses and perform with big shots in a very short amount of time. Marching ahead with big strides this band is definitely the torch bearer of the Indiana underground death metal scene.

The Bucketlist With THE BEAST OF NOD

*In this series we pose the age old questions to a wide array of music lovers. As fans of music most of us keep a mental list of active bands we want to see live that we haven’t yet seen. The Bucketlist brings to you those lists of your favorite artists and why those bands mean so much to them*

We are back again with our Bucketlist segment and today we have technical death metal quartet from Boston, MA, THE BEAST OF NOD. In an age where there are a plethora of genre names, it is sometimes hard to categorise a band, but who cares? Here we are, with this Boston outfit who in their own words play “intergalactic death metal”, as crazy and interesting it sounds, the band’s ferocious and high speed brutal death metal certainly does keep upto it’s self imposed genre name. You might think these are some extra terrestrial bunch of sci fi aliens who formed up a band and is ready to wreck chaos upon humankind, while you’re watching Netflix on your recliner. Nah, they are just pretty chill, nerd tech death guys who do get into beast mode once they shred like hell with linear song structures, extreme tremolo pickings, odd time signatures and outright technical passages. So much techy!

Review: UNFLESH – ‘Savior’ [Official Video Stream]

Boston-based, extreme metal band, Unflesh is set to release their first full-length studio album, ‘Savior’ on May 25th, 2018. The musical style on this record embodies the aura of black metal wickedness, while infusing technical death metal ferocity and rich, complex melodies in a way that transcend the confinements of a single sub-genre. The riffing is ingeniously intricate and inspired, vocals are venomous and vile, but those drums! The hyper aggressive drumming performance on ‘Savior’ is utterly relentless and impressive thanks to the otherworldly kit skills of drummer, Chris Dovas (Seven Spires). Not to diminish the other elements, which are arguably just as awesome, but what Dovas so phenominally brings to this record is almost its own selling point. Continue reading

Album Review: RIVERS OF NIHIL – ‘Where Owls Know My Name’ [Track Streams]

The mystery that shrouds any band’s upcoming album, especially of a band that is well versed with diversity in their music, is certainly not nonchalant. I wasn’t aware RIVERS OF NIHIL would be coming up with their third studio effort, ‘Where Owls Know My Name‘ this year until a few weeks back. As soon as the news dawned upon my conscience, I knew I had to request the album for a review, cause I remember their 2015 album, ‘Monarchy‘ had impressed me so much, it left me wanting for more. Fast forward to March 16th, 2018, the Pennsylvania quintet will be dropping their third full length in what could possibly be their best effort and certainly one that will garner itself a place in the top ten album listing by this year’s end.

Releasing on Metal Blade Records this 16th, RIVERS OF NIHIL have set the bar high when it comes to discovering uncharted territories that transcends your musical comfort zone. One of the most recently emerging and forward thinking artist in the metal sphere, the band has always managed to drop jaws with their progressive yet ferocious music. Not to forget, the wide array of experimentation the band has delved in their work, which makes RIVERS OF NIHIL truly an artistically elite band. So, with all the teasing I just did, do I make it look like ‘Where Owls Know My Name‘ easily surpasses what its predecessor achieved? Let’s find out!
