I am a 28 year old Vocalist and Metal enthusiast from Dodge City Kansas. My favorite bands are Carach Angren, Behemoth, Amon Amarth, Gorgoroth, Dimmu Borgir, Hour of Penance, Hiss from the Moat, Archspire, Nekrogoblikon, and of course SLAYER.
A fearsome battle cry is heard from the North: AmonAmarth, five brutish warriors from Tumba, Sweden face an army of raving fanatics from all parts of the globe. Having formed in 1992, vocalist Johan Hegg, guitarists Olavi Mikkonen & Johan Söderberg, bassist Ted Lundström, and drummer Jocke Wallgren have had plenty of experience venturing out into the world, speaking of Viking lore and fantasy, and conquering the stages of every land they set their eyes upon. 2019 marks the dawn of ‘Berserker’ via MetalBladeRecords/Sony Music, the 11th studio album from these melodic death metal titans, and it is definitely not one that you would like to catch you sleeping. ‘Berserker’ is a full-on auditory assault of brutal savagery, primal ferocity, and plenty of beautiful melodies sure to please fans of AmonAmarth, both young and old. Behemoth is just one of those bands that really do not require an introduction. Spawning from pure darkness in Gdansk Poland in 1991 and emerging on to the black metal scene with raw, unfiltered ferocity, they maintained this style with heathen lyrical content into the late 90’s where they shifted to occult, and thelemic inspiration and showed that they could also be a reckoning force in the death metal scene with the release of “Satanica“. At this time the world also quickly came to realize that Behemoth was unique in it’s own way thanks to the drum styling of Inferno, multi layered vocals and some middle eastern influence. Behemoth is now comprised of Nergal (vocals/guitar), Orion (bass/vocals), and Inferno (drums). There are plenty of those who would like to say that Behemoth is a blackened death metal project, but Nergal prefers to consider them without a label, which to me is completely acceptable when facing a true artist who does in no way conform to the status quo. Behemoth has released 10 studio albums since conception, and tomorrow, October 5th 2018, they grace the world with their 11th release “I Loved You At Your Darkest” via Metal Blade Records. Everyone enjoys a good cover song, especially if the people that cover it bring their own sense of originality to one of our old favorites. You might even be surprised at the places you find raw, unadultered talent, which is exactly how I felt when I stumbled across a Facebook video of Hugo Hernandez and Orlando Galvan of the band Aether from Dodge City, Kansas performing a hauntingly beautiful unplugged version of System Of A Down’s legendary song “Toxicity”. The hype man is alive and well in the metal community, and his name is John f**king Goblikon. If you aren’t listening to Los Angeles, California’s melodic death metal jesters NEKROGOBLIKON yet you are seriously missing out on one of the best acts to grace the stages of the United States. Nicky “Scorpion” Calonne (Lead Vocals, Keyboard) Alex “Goldberg” Alereza (Guitar, Backing Vocals), Aaron “Raptor” Minich (Keyboard, Backing Vocals), Aaron “Zoot” VanZutphen. NEKROGOBLIKONhas released 3 full albums ‘Goblin Island’, ‘Stench’, and ‘Heavy Meta’ as well as one solid E.P. ‘Power’ since they crawled out of some smelly hole in California back in 2006, and now they’ve dropped another one on our heads titled ‘Welcome To Bonkers’ which released on Friday, April 13th 2018 courtesy of Seek And Strike Records. Anatomy Of A Creation is a Kentucky based Deathcore project, and the brainchild of Anthony Leasgang its sole member. Founded in 2012 Anatomy Of A Creation gave the world its first listen in 2013 with a 5 track E.P. ‘Murderer’ and since then has gone on to put out 3 additional E.P.s and two full length albums.
Anatomy Of A Creation actually just released their 2nd full length album on 3-3-2018 titled ‘Contamination’ and what an album it is coming from the mind of just one person. This album in its entirety is filled with some nasty down tuned guitar, heart stopping breakdowns, and perfectly placed fast picking segments, All of which compliment the throaty, seemingly pissed off vocals of Leasgang. Dimmu Borgir is celebrating 25 of baptizing the world in darkness and fire, and with it being 7 long years since the release of their most recent studio album ‘ABRAHADABRA‘you should be elated to know that Dimmu Borgir has finally broken the soul torturing silence and confirmed that their 10th studio album titled ‘Eonian’ is set to be released on May 4th, 2018! 2018 is finally here! I don’t know about you, but after all the terrible shit that happened in the world this past year I’m definitely glad there was a heaping mound of great metal album releases to fall back on when things got rough. I think we can all agree that good music is more than just luxury we enjoy, but to many of us, a necessity, an escape from the tumultuous clamor of our increasingly difficult realities. When you’re a person who loves heavy music more than you love most people sifting through all of the stellar releases 2017 has given us can become a daunting task, but after some time for reflection I’ve compiled my ten favorites, and I’m excited to share them with you. This month in State Of The Art we are going to Kentucky, and first up we have a heavy hitting Death Metal trio named KUR who make their lair in Lexington. KUR is the depraved union of Apollyon – Drums, Mortimus Bile – Bass/Vocals, and Aciel – Guitar/Vocals. I’m inclined to think this band is an extremely fresh face on the scene from what little information ive been able to gather on this brutal trinity of unholy monstrosities, which gives them all the more appealing. I happened to stumble upon them in a stroke of random chance just earlier today after I heard the track “Drowning The Kings Heir” which was released in anticipation of their upcoming EP with Hominine Records, to be released on New Year’s Eve of this year. KUR reminds me of some of the best Death Metal/Black Metal hybrids that hail from Europe. They have slight raw feel to them, dark and heavy riffs complimented with hellish drumming and powerful guttural vocals, fusing the best parts of Death Metal and Black Metal for a satisfying listening experience.
