KNOTFEST ROADSHOW Plows Through Nebraska [Review & Photo Gallery]

Slipknot’s “Knotfest Roadshow” made huge news throughout the metal community when it was announced back in March. That twenty-nine cities run is now in full swing and Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska had the opportunity to host a brilliant night of music. The line-up is certainly a global affair as it featured the extreme metalists from Poland, Behemoth, the technical powerhouse Gojira from France, and the hard rocking outfit Volbeat from Denmark. Slipknot would close to the show in a fashion of chaotic perfection that only they can deliver. Continue reading

Gretchen Piening’s Top 10 Albums Of 2018!

2018 was just like every other year. It felt like it went by at the pace of molasses, and then all of a sudden it’s October. But seriously, this was my first year writing for Metal Nexus and it has been a blast. Reviewing sick albums, interviewing some fabulous people and having to immerse myself into music, helping me enjoy it more and more each day. Honestly, my top 10 list came together a lot easier than I anticipated. Having a handful of metalcore records this year built the 10, basically upon their release. I’m just such a sucker for that sound- hence my #1 pick. Often times I box myself in with what I listen to but keeping an ear open all year helped me to realize that there is beauty and fun in a diverse palette. The Spotify yearly wrap up did a hilarious job of reminding me of just that. So with all that said, here are my picks (begrudgingly without any of the country music I loved this year) for the top 10 rock and metal albums of 2018. Thank you for taking the time to read not just this, but any of my work this year published on Metal Nexus. It sincerely means the world. Metalcore 2019!

Supergroup HISS FROM THE MOAT Release Video For “The Harrier”

Transcontinental black/death metal band Hiss From The Moat have released a lyric video for their new track, “The Harrier”. This international powerhouse was founded by James Payne (Vital Remains, Hour of Penance) with Italian friends bassist/vocalist Carlo Cremascoli and guitarist Giacomo “Jack” Poli. In 2009 the three-piece released their debut EP The Carved Flesh Message. Sharing the stage with acts such as Psycroptic, Skeletonwitch and The Black Dahlia Murder they took their project to as many audiences as possible. Four years later they released their debut full-length Misanthropy via Lacerated Enemy/Nuclear Blast. During this period Payne left Italian death metal band Vital Remains to work full time on Hiss From The Moat. Taking their blended sound of black and death metal the band toured Europe and Asia with acts such as Behemoth, Belphegor and Rotting Christ. The band then brought on guitarist/vocalist Max Cirelli. Behemoth, At The Gates, Wolves In The Throne Room Terrorize Charlotte! [Review & Photo Gallery]

Behemoth

The Ecclesia Diabolica America tour stopped at The Underground in Charlotte, NC, just a couple days before Halloween, and brought with it a three of the biggest names in the underground metal scene. Wolves In The Throne Room, At the Gates, and Behemoth brought the club to near capacity as the Carolinas showed that they appreciate a great tour when it comes through. Continue reading

Album Review: Behemoth “I Loved You At Your Darkest”

Behemoth is just one of those bands that really do not require an introduction.  Spawning from pure darkness in Gdansk Poland in 1991 and emerging on to the black metal scene with raw, unfiltered ferocity, they maintained this style with heathen lyrical content into the late 90’s where they shifted to occult, and thelemic inspiration and showed that they could also be a reckoning force in the death metal scene with the release of “Satanica. At this time the world also quickly came to realize that Behemoth was unique in it’s own way thanks to the drum styling of Inferno, multi layered vocals and some middle eastern influence. Behemoth is now comprised of Nergal (vocals/guitar), Orion (bass/vocals), and Inferno (drums).  There are plenty of those who would like to say that Behemoth is a blackened death metal project, but Nergal prefers to consider them without a label, which to me is completely acceptable when facing a true artist who does in no way conform to the status quo. Behemoth has released 10 studio albums since conception, and tomorrow, October 5th 2018, they grace the world with their 11th release “I Loved You At Your Darkest” via Metal Blade Records. BEHEMOTH Unveil New Video For “Wovles Ov Siberia”

Hailing from Poland, blackened death metal band, Behemoth formed in 1991. Releasing 10 albums with Nergal riffing on guitar and vocals, Inferno Manning the drum cannons, Orion creating low end frequencies, and Seth holding rhythm duties. The band has been the torch bearers for embodying evil in the death metal genre. Behemoth recently just wrapped up a tour opening for the all mighty Slayer on their final world tour. To be included on a lineup along side 3 of thrash’s Big Four shows Behemoth has molded themselves into a must see and well respected group of musicians. Continue reading

BEHEMOTH Unveils Teaser Of New Tune, But You Gotta Recite A Prayer First!

As bands think of unique ways to tease their fans with new music, BEHEMOTH has done the extra ordinary in offering the first preview of new music today. So, the Polish death metallers have a new album coming out very soon, and today, in the words of the band themselves, you have to “pledge your allegiance to BEHEMOTH by reciting a prayer to receive a gift.” Turns out the gift here is the much awaited, first contact of the snippet of a new BEHEMOTH tune from their forthcoming album. It’s simple and cool, recite the prayer and have your “gift” bestowed onto you by the unholy gods of Polish death metal.

METALDAYS Slovenia Featuring JUDAS PRIEST, BEHEMOTH, ACCEPT & More

Well, we before we even begin this, let’s just admit it, Europe has the best metal festivals under its belt. From what I consider three of the currently biggest metal summer festivals are in Europe, the ever glorious Wacken Open Air in Germany, Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium and Hellfest in France. And, not just that every or the other country in Europe has some festival going on, you just name it and it’s there. Be it Czech Republic’s Brutal Assault, Denmark’s Copenhell, Spain’s Resurrection Fest, Rock Am Ring in Germany, Download and Bloodstock at metal’s home, England. It’s a fun and metal galore. If you have the time and money you are just blinded and caught in a dilemma as to which metal fest you’d wanna attend. Every year European metal festivals deliver, and it’s not just about the music and the incredible line-up, it’s also about the fun activities that go with it. Be it wrestling, mud fight, karaoke, football, just about everything under this goddamn sky.

Today, we throw some much deserved limelight to one of the biggest and most exciting metal festival in Central Europe and quite possibly in the whole of the continent. From the Balkan peninsula, Slovenia’s biggest metal festival MetalDays is what we’re going to talk about today. MetalDays undoubtedly is one of the most fun filled and exciting metal festival, from exciting line-ups to sun bathing at the beach nearby, to the serene and marvellous landscape, the festival is a perfect getaway for the summer. And, unlike most of the fests, which are during the weekend and with a maximum duration of three days, MetalDays beats them all and promises to give you the best vacation with a whole week of fun and frolic. Hell! if you add the pre-arrival it’s almost a two week metal extravaganza. The festivities commence from 22nd July up until the 28th.
