World’s Loudest Month Spotlight: DANCE GAVIN DANCE

*This is part of the “World’s Loudest Month” segment where we branch out and focus on bands that fans can see at this year’s biggest music festivals during the month of May 2018!  This week, we’re checking out Dance Gavin Dance, a stoner metal quartet from Portland, Oregon, who are geared up for this year’s Rock On The Range, as well as others!*

With the multitude of merging subgenres these days, it would seem that you can’t always describe a band exactly to someone that may have never heard them before. They are becoming so much more diverse, experimenting with a range of styles, and that’s not a bad thing at all! For this has given rise to the next generation of boundary pushing artists with a new lease of excitement and experimentation – one of those bands that is pushing right at the forefront is Dance Gavin Dance.

The Californian quintet rose out of the dissolution of several other bands including Farewell Unknown, Ghost Runner on Third and Atherton. Together the amalgamation of individual band members with such differing styles fused to form Dance Gavin Dance in 2005, where what was achieved was a truly unique sound that combines post-hardcore, math-rock, experimental rock, and prog rock…with argueably even a little metalcore/screamo added to the mix.

The dynamic of serenity and aggression, soundscape textures against methodical fretwork, and raw versus clean gives an overall experience that is openly enticing, yet seems slightly wild where the unexpected is just around the corner. Dance Gavin Dance has managed to create music that can appeal and encapsulate fans from across the musical spectrum and continue to surprise along the way! Continue reading

State Of The Art: VACANT [Debut EP Stream + Video Stream]

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state.*

This month’s state is Georgia!

For this month’s final ‘State Of The Art’ for our featured state of Georgia, I thought I would take a look at a band that up until a year ago were a mindset, as opposed to a reality. Having thundered onto the scene quite literally out of nowhere after dropping their intense debut EP ‘In Retrospect’ in August last year, let me welcome Atlanta-based (yes, the place where it’s all happening!) metallers Vacant.

The quintet featuring Jaden Garrity (vocals), Christian Nowatzki (guitar), Daniel Norton (guitar), David Adler-Diaz (drums) and Gage Tindol (bass) have already created quite a storm in their hometown, which has seen them gain their place supporting Carnifex on the Atlanta date of the ‘Chaos & Carnage’ Tour. Featuring alongside Oceano, Spite, Buried Above Ground, Shadow of Intent and Shryne the event will take place on April 16th at the Masquerade, Atlanta – and I think it’s fair to say that they have certainly earned their place! Live Review : SEPULTURA ‘Machine Messiah’ In London, UK! [Photo Gallery]

Arriving a half hour early to any gig is perhaps not the best idea, especially when it is freezing cold with snow in the air, but I wasn’t the only one keen to get into Londons iconic Koko in Camden town ahead of tonight’s monumental performance. On their headlining tour in support of their record ‘Machine Messiah’ that just so happens to coincide with vocalist Derrick Green marking 20 years with the band, the mighty Brazilian legends Sepultura. There was a decent crowd joining me already and the vocal topic of choice was the Cannibal Corpse gig happening right around the corner, but we were all in agreement that tonight’s line-up of Fit For An Autopsy, Goatwhore and Obscura as supports was far too appealing.

Londons Koko is perhaps one of the most beautiful venues I have been too. Formerly one of the largest theatres outside of Londons West End, the venue itself boasts numerous viewing platforms with many touches celebrating its mixed and magical past as a theatre, cinema and now as a dedicated music venue. Inside the lights were already dim with the stage illuminated red and blue spotlights gleaming across the lower floor. Many fans rushed to the pit barrier to claim their front row spot for the evening and within about 10 minutes the 2000+ capacity venue was already looking full. Continue reading

MEKA NISM Release “The War Inside” Video From Upcoming EP [Video Stream]

Florida based alternative metallers Meka Nism have just released the official video to the single “The War Inside”, off their forthcoming The War Inside’ EP.

The debut single is a visual representation of the internal struggles that some of us battle with throughout our lives – from anxiety to depression, addiction to insecurity. In the video, the story is one of self-healing, reflected through the spiritual journey of the shaman. Frontwoman Meka portrays both her own lost soul fragments, and her own hero. She faces her fears by confronting them head on in each of her energy centers, portrayed by six butoh dancers (Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Solar Plexus, Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra and Third Eye Chakra).

Meka says “We each have the power and courage to face our struggles and to save ourselves from all that we are desperately fighting. The intention behind “The War Inside” is to help inspire and create the energy to empower others to take their own healing journey and know that everything we need to win our war is already inside of us.” Continue reading

SIKTH And EXIST IMMORTAL At ‘NME Best Small Venue’ The Forum, UK [Review + Photo Gallery]

Just before embarking on their mini EU tour including debut shows across Germany and the Netherlands Complexity Festival alongside Carnifex, The Faceless and others, djent pioneers SikTh treated UK fans to two intimate performances with Londons Exist Immortal. Firstly at Sub 89 in Reading, and secondly to my local venue and ‘NME Best Small Venue 2012’ The Forum in Tunbridge Wells. This gig marks one of many celebrating to small 250 capacity venues’ 25th anniversary celebrations, which has a reputation of giving a stage to bands before they made it big. SikTh are locally held in very high regard where they are practically legends and it was a pleasure to have them back here once again. UK alternative hardcore act Cove were announced as openers but unfortunately had to reschedule to the following Sunday – a shame for those attending as Cove perform with such an explosive veracity that they would have put on one hell of an opening performance! Despite this slight alteration to the evening, together SikTh and Exist Immortal both delivered equally passionate and energetic performances, where their two distinctive styles accentuated one another with their mix of djent and melodic verses. DESPISED ICON Come-back Headliner In London, UK! [Review + Photo Gallery]

“It’s been a long f**king time!” shouted front man Alex Erian. In fact, it’s been 11 years since Despised Icon have graced our shores with a headline set – long since 2007’s phenomenal co-headline UK/European tour with Misery Index, Annotations For An Autopsy and Beneath The Massacre. Whilst they have played the UK as recently as 2016, tonight marked a monumental occasion, firmly solidifying the Montreal metallers legacy and dominance over the Deathcore scene. For fans, this headline set may have been a long time coming but ‘The Beast’ is back and fully reawakened!

Following immediately on from their sold-out show in Antwerp, tonight’s performance at The Dome in central London marked the first leg of the UK section of this momentous comeback tour. With only a handful of tickets left on the door of this 500 capacity venue, and subsequent shows at Birmingham and Manchester expected to sell out, it was clear that everyone here was about to witness something very special. With support combining the best tech, hardcore and slam, whoever put this line-up together must be some kind of god-tier genius – for joining alongside Despised Icon were Vulvodynia, Archspire and the UK’s very own Malevolence. Missing this show was not an option!

Gothenburg Doomsters Monolord have had quite the year in 2017 with their recently released third album ‘Rust’ receiving universal praise in reviews, and landing atop on multiple Album of The Year lists – including the #1 Album of 2017 on the Doom Charts.
