‘Summoned to Rise’: the new album from Create A Kill is an homage to forefathers of Thrash, specifically those that would help shape the birth of Death Metal, ala Slayer, Sodom, Possessed, Kreator, and Dark Angel. Create A Kill carve out a vicious collection of tunes that will make you want your bang your head like it’s 1989! ‘Summoned to Rise’ was recorded and mixed by Gus Rios who also wrote all the music for the album while Alex Marquez and Matt Harvey contributed all the lyrics. The album was released July 13, 2018.

1989 was the birth year for the band Pezz. Forming in the hometown of Elvis Presley this Memphis quartet brought punk rock to a town with the blues. Pezz is Memphis’ longest-running socially conscious punk band. The band is currently comprised of founding members Marvin Stockwell and Ceylon Mooney. Having performed as a trio previously and several lineup changes the remainder of the band is currently Shawn Apple, and Christian Walker. Ben Nichols the vocalist of American country-punk rock band Lucero also was once a member of Pezz as a bassist from 1997 until 1998 when he left the band to form Lucero. The bands first demo was recorded in 1991, just as the band were cutting their teeth in the all ages hardcore and punk scene based at the legendary Antenna Club. The band followed up and released two 7″ EPs in 1992 and 1993. It wasn’t until 1995 that the band would release their debut album ‘Livin’ The Life Of Riley’ on the Memphis based Truant Records label. Two years later the band signed with Los Angeles punk rock label BYO Records that was owned and ran by two of the brothers in the California punk rock band Youth Brigade. It was after signing to the label that the band would attain more national attention and thus the band began a non-stop 4 year tour taking them through the U.S., Canada, UK and Europe. Since 1997 the band has 8 releases the last of which was the EP ‘The Wicked Leading the Blind’ in 2010. Fast forward 8 years and the band has now recorded and released a new full length album titled ‘More Than You Can Give Us’, their first full length since 2001. The album contains 10 lyrically inquisitive tracks and released on August 25, 2018. The album was recorded by the band in January of 2012 at their practice space and later mixed by engineer Alan Burcham. ‘More Than You Can Give Us’ was then mastered by sough-after-loud-rock mastering engineer Brad Boatright (Sleep, American Standards) at Audioseige in Portland, Oregon. Pezz is no longer the touring juggernaut they once were and they stay relatively close to home and work to apply the ideals and concepts they sing about and improve their local community.  Continue reading →

Sir Collapse formed in 2013 in Neuss, Germany. Sir Collapse combines elements of alternative, grunge and prog into their music to make a special blend of music that is unique to them. The members that make up the band are Lukas Kuppers on vocals, Philipp Krach providing the riffs, Dennis Ozmen on bass and Martin Herrmann behind the drum kit. The band recorded and released their first demo of 5 tracks in March of 2015. The band followed that up with the release of their debut EP ‘Audiofil Citrate’ in January 2016. The band has recently recorded and released their first full length album titled ‘Walk To The Moon’. Sir Collapse recorded the record at Gottesweg Studio A in Cologne, Germany. In an effort to recreate a live feeling within their music the band didn’t track each instrument and instead decided to record everything in one room together. The band also left any small mistakes in the final recorded and didn’t edit them out so the album would be even more true to their live shows or a rehearsal session. The stunning artwork for the album and also in the inner sleeve/booklet was created by Justin at Nepomuk – Illistration. ‘Walk To The Moon’ was released on October 19th, 2018.  Continue reading →

The Charm The Fury formed in Amsterdam in 2010 and solidified their metal sound with their first album ‘A Shade Of My Former Self’ in 2013. It was a few years later when the band truly turned heads as they were signed to Nuclear Blast Records and released ‘The Sick, Dumb & Happy’. The band tour the U.S. playing several festivals along the way including Carolina Rebellion, Welcome To Rockville, Northern Invasion and revived the Wall Of Death among fans and moshers wherever they took the stage. The band was led by charismatic lead vocalist Caroline Westendorp. Her vocals were far superior to other female fronted bands and the band often was compared to the might legends Pantera. Rhythm guitarist Mathijs Parent exited the band in 2016 followed by lead guitarist Rolf Perdok in 2017.  Once those founding members left the band they had been pretty quiet after finishing out their tour schedule. On November 20th the band made a statement on Facebook that the band is officially breaking up.

Not only was tonight the climax of prog-rockers Ohhms’ headline UK tour with Boss Keloid, it doubled up as a half-dayer release party for their eagerly awaited sophomore record ‘Exist’. Released just two days prior on Holy Roar Records,I admit that the temptation to listen to the full stream premiering on Metal Hammer in the run up to the show wasn’t an easy one to ignore, but my decision was final. I for one wanted to keep the thrill real, unlike the instant gratification junkies who whore over new releases with no real connection made or lasting dedication to the artists cause. Nothing beats the experience of hearing brand new music live for the first time and witnessing the passion first-hand. Ohhms deservedly took their place as headliners and showed why they are one of the scenes biggest risers.

Taking place at the Boston Music Room, little brother to The Dome in Tufnell Park, London. The night featured a mixed bill showcasing brand new talent from Old Blood and Mountain Caller with label mates Body Hound for the first half, and London doomsters Torpor and Boss Keloid as direct support for the second.     Continue reading →
