Max Cavalera On ‘Ritual’ “Marc [Rizzo] Channeled His Best Impersonation Of Fast Eddy Clark (Motorhead)”

There are some of the guys in this heavy metal music industry who are nothing short of mega massive walking icons for the heavy metal. we are of course talking about one of the legends who has helped pioneer many genre defining bands, especially SEPULTURA. Yes, the spotlight is on our Brazilian brother, Max Cavalera.

This one man army has single handedly led the charge for the extreme metal genre way too many times now. Juggling three to four active bands all at the same time is something Max does without even the slightest sense of nervousness or failure. Max Cavalera after having departed from SEPULTURA in 1996, re-channeled his passion for heavy music in the form of bands like SOULFLY which is an incarnation as close to SEPULTURA it can be, KILLER BE KILLED is a super-group formed in 2011 with the members of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and MASTODON, and lastly CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, which Max fronts along with his brother Igor. Cavalera was also involved in a short-lived side project called NAILBOMB. So there you can see, it’s evident that this Brazilian bad ass is surely a jack of all trades.

Review – SOULFLY ‘Ritual’ [Track Stream]

This October 19th, 2018 Brazilian metal veterans Soulfly are set to release their 11th full-length album, ‘Ritual’ via Nuclear Blast.  In recent interviews, frontman/guitarist Max Cavalera has described the new album’s sound as “tribal-death-thrash.” In the early years, Soulfly could be described as more of a nu-metal act that incorporated elements of thrash, tribal percussions, and reggae into the mix, so the direction of ‘Ritual’ was intended to be something of a return to earlier form for the band which has taken on more of a traditional groove-thrash approach as of late. Max, who left the legendary Sepultura to pursue Soulfly as his main musical outlet in 1998 has traditionally invited a number of guest artists to feature on each album, while the main band lineup itself has been something of a revolving door for a number of years – aside from lead guitar shredder Marc Rizzo since 2003. In 2012, Max’s son Zyon Cavalera joined the group as drummer and has continued on as a permanent member ever since, while providing progressively more impressive skills behind the kit with each new album release. Appearing for the first time on album with the band and signing on in 2015 is Mike Leon on bass. Staying true to tradition, ‘Ritual’ features powerful guest performances from metal heavy-hitters Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) and Ross Dolan (Immolation). Continue reading

Mikey Doling On Second SNOT Album Rumor, “We Didn’t Have Any Songs That Were Put Together Yet”

Mikey Doling (Snot, Soulfly, Channel Zero) is Joshua Toomey’s interview guest for this week’s episode of Talk Toomey: The Metal Nexus Podcast. Among other topics, their discussion puts to rest rumors that the ‘Strait Up’ tribute album consisted of songs originally intended to be the follow-up to Snot‘s debut album ‘Get Some.’ “We didn’t have any songs that were put together yet,” says Doling. “Some of the riffs on ‘Strait up’ are some of the riffs we were writing. But as far as songs go – not one of them.” Continue reading

METALDAYS Slovenia Featuring JUDAS PRIEST, BEHEMOTH, ACCEPT & More

Well, we before we even begin this, let’s just admit it, Europe has the best metal festivals under its belt. From what I consider three of the currently biggest metal summer festivals are in Europe, the ever glorious Wacken Open Air in Germany, Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium and Hellfest in France. And, not just that every or the other country in Europe has some festival going on, you just name it and it’s there. Be it Czech Republic’s Brutal Assault, Denmark’s Copenhell, Spain’s Resurrection Fest, Rock Am Ring in Germany, Download and Bloodstock at metal’s home, England. It’s a fun and metal galore. If you have the time and money you are just blinded and caught in a dilemma as to which metal fest you’d wanna attend. Every year European metal festivals deliver, and it’s not just about the music and the incredible line-up, it’s also about the fun activities that go with it. Be it wrestling, mud fight, karaoke, football, just about everything under this goddamn sky.

Today, we throw some much deserved limelight to one of the biggest and most exciting metal festival in Central Europe and quite possibly in the whole of the continent. From the Balkan peninsula, Slovenia’s biggest metal festival MetalDays is what we’re going to talk about today. MetalDays undoubtedly is one of the most fun filled and exciting metal festival, from exciting line-ups to sun bathing at the beach nearby, to the serene and marvellous landscape, the festival is a perfect getaway for the summer. And, unlike most of the fests, which are during the weekend and with a maximum duration of three days, MetalDays beats them all and promises to give you the best vacation with a whole week of fun and frolic. Hell! if you add the pre-arrival it’s almost a two week metal extravaganza. The festivities commence from 22nd July up until the 28th.

Max Cavalera Describes Upcoming SOULFLY Album as “Tribal Death Thrash”

As a member of one of the pioneering bands in the death/thrash scene of the 80’s and 90’s, Brazilian-born, Max Cavalera was the original vocalist and rhythm guitarist in Sepultura from 1984 to 1996; his brother Igor was the original drummer. Throughout Max’s tenure with Sepultura, he would act as one of the predominant creative forces for pushing the band’s musical style to experimental new territories. Their 1993 release, ‘Chaos A.D.,’ with its groundbreaking industrial/tribal sound, is considered by many to be one of the greatest metal albums of all time. As an industrial metal side project, Cavalera recorded another groundbreaking album, ‘Point Blank’ under the monicker, Nailbomb with Alex Newport of Fudge Tunnel in 1994. Sepultura’s ‘Roots’ LP, released two years later, would further expand upon tribal elements as well as incorporate nu-metal influences that would contribute to creative differences within the group and ultimately to Cavalera’s departure from the band. His leaving would create a rift between the Cavalera brothers as Igor remained on as drummer for Sepultura. Max would then go on to form the tribal/nu-metal outfit, Soulfly in 1997 and has since released ten albums with the band, and one in the works for 2018. In 2007, Max and his brother Igor reconciled and formed the groove/thrash band Cavalera Conspiracy together, along with guitarist, Marc Rizzo of Soulfly. The band has released four albums to date. As part of another side project, Cavalera co-founded the metal supergroup, Killer Be Killed in 2011 along with Greg Puciatio of The Dillinger Escape Plan. The band released their self-titled LP in 2014. Continue reading

Max Cavalera On Vegas Shooting “People Cannot Stop Going, Or Stop Playing Live From Fear Of That”

There are some of the guys in this heavy metal music industry who are nothing short of mega massive walking encyclopaedias. They have so much knowledge when it comes to the music they love, the bands, the underground scene and everything that goes into this larger than life thing we all love called metal. Nope, we ain’t talking about the obvious talisman Fenriz here, we are in fact talking about one of the legends who has helped pioneer many genre defining bands, especially SEPULTURA. Yes, the spotlight is on our Brazilian brother, Max Cavalera.

We Sold Our Souls To Metal Tour Review – Knoxville

Max Cavalera of Soulfly

Max Cavalera of Soulfly

Soulfly is usually always touring with amazing bands. Even a Cavalera family reunion is a great touring package aka Maximum Cavalera Tour from the past. The family tree has amassed several kick ass bands. On this particular night we would be partaking in not on Soulfly, but Swedish metal legends Soilwork, Shattered Sun, Earthside and local Knoxville natives Scent of Remains. There was a couple downfalls on this night that led to some heartbreak. First and foremost it was very disappointing that Decapitated was unable to get their visas and thus not being able to get onto U.S. soil. So can we all please raise our middle fingers to the guy in immigration that wanted to be a douche and prevent them from making the tour. We were highly looking forward to banging our heads to their particular brand of metal. With an already early start time newcomers to the tour package Earthside and Scent of Remains played before we even made it to Knoxville’s premiere music venue The International. Those bands got a start a little sooner than even listed for the event. Although we missed those bands I will tell you now that Scent of Remains is a brutal band that will be a nationally touring act in their own time. So get your ass to one of their shows you will thank me later. Continue reading
