MINISTRY & ALIEN WEAPONRY Invade Minneapolis! [Review & Photo Gallery]

Ministry

The Skyway Theatre welcomed an interesting bill to the stage. One band is over three decades into its existence while the other has embarked on its first ever U.S. tour. Ministry is an Industrial Music giant. They gave rise to a genre that has legions of loyal fans across the globe. Al Jourgensen, founding member and singer, is an instantly recognizable figure no matter where he goes. On the other end of the spectrum is where we find the opening band Alien Weaponry. They are band comprised of teenagers that are ready to make their own mark across the vast metal musical landscape. Carpenter Brut was also on the bill but due to unforeseen circumstances were unable to perform. Continue reading

Underoath

Underoath has returned with a vengeance. The band released the album “Erase Me” earlier in the year and is bringing a renewed excitement to its fans across the United States. Dance Gavin Dance, Crown The Empire, and The Plot In You provided support. Unfortunately a weather event pushed my commute time from twenty-five minutes to two-hours. I arrived just as The Plot In You was leaving the stage. Continue reading

JOHN GARCIA Returns With ‘John Garcia And The Band Of Gold’

Desert rock legend John Garcia is back with and he brought some sand-covered riffs for your ears. Garcia is a founding member and former vocalist of the now disbanded Kyuss. Since their split Garcia has not stopped working on project after project, often bringing on old bandmates like Scott Reeder and Brant Bjork. After forming Slo Burn, Unida, and Vista Chino Garcia released two solo albums. Some of these included original material or different takes on old Kyuss tunes. Since his last recording, The Coyote Who Spoke in Tongues, John Garcia and the band have found a new energy that is palpable from the first note.

John Garcia And The Band Of Gold begins with the introductory track, “Space Vato”. As tiring as introduction tracks have become, this ramped up an energy that prepared you for the coming tide of the album. Garcia’s identifiable and unique voice is as strong as ever. With the small bite-sized tracks the album does not exhaust or lose momentum; One track moves on to the next without one staying for too long. Tracks like “Chicken Delight” and “Popcorn (Hit Me When You Can)” are groovy tracks rooted in old acid rock with modern aggression and style to them. “Lilliana” is riff powered desert rock, something that can only be born from sand. My favorite track on the record “Apache Junction” is pure Sabbath-worship that channels the energy of a song like “Hand of Doom”. After spending a day in the desert, you sit and stare at the stars with “Softer Side”. This ends the album on a soft and euphoric note.

John Garcia And the Band Of Gold is out via Napalm Records  January 4 with a European tour happening shortly after its release (dates below). To keep up with John Garcia and his band, follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

*This is part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state. This month’s state is Iowa.*

Named after the infamous cult leader who initiated the mass murder-suicide of hundreds of his followers during the Jonestown Massacre of 1978, Jim Jones is “a good old-fashioned metal band out of Waterloo, Iowa.” As the rest of their tagline reads, “We play loud, we play heavy. Drink the fucking Kool Aid!” For those familiar with the original Jim Jones, the Kool-Aid reference is just pure metal in its blatant callousness. Continue reading

Providing us with music from EMP Label Group, Dan by Dave Ellefson, these young guys have already shared the stage with the likes of Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Trivium, Suicidal Tendencies, and many many more. Having charted across Amazon and iTunes, there’s no surprise as to why this outfit are growing as quickly as they are. After 8 years Carolina Rebellion has come to an end with the split between DWP and AEG. Because of the naming rights the festival had to be renamed for DWP to continue with the festival. As of today it was released that the new name of the festival will be the EPICENTER Festival. The festival will still take place in early May on May 10th thru 12th. However, the location has changed from Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina where Carolina Rebellion was held the past several years to Rockingham, North Carolina at the Rockingham Festival Grounds where the festival was originally held in its early years. The location change also brings with it some additional advantages for the festival. DWP has stated “With the move to our new site, we’re developing 140 acres into festival grounds, which will allow us to provide enhances camping amenities, nighttime entertainment with no curfew, and expanded food and beverage offerings, all highlighted by a massive music lineup covering the spectrum of rock and alternative music.”  Continue reading
