Bourbon & Beyond Festival Spotlight: +LIVE+ [Official Videos]

Photo: Janson Bulpin

+LIVE+ will be one of the upcoming acts at this year’s Bourbon and Beyond. The festival now has a new home. It is still in Louisville, Kentucky of course, but will call a new festival grounds home. This year, Bourbon and Beyond will take place at the Highland Festival Grounds at the Kentucky Expo on September 20th, 21st, and 22nd. The previous location, Champions Park, had a terrible flood last year and day 2 of Bourbon and Beyond as well as Louder Than Life the following weekend was cancelled. However, to make up for that, Bourbon and Beyond is now a 3-day festival. This means an additional day of bands, bourbon and best friends! How awesome is that? This will be +LIVE+’s debut at the Bourbon and Beyond Festival. If you have never had the opportunity to check this band out, prepare yourself to be amazed! With that said, let’s discuss +LIVE+. THE CONTORTIONIST Flourish On Stage In Warsaw, Poland [Review & Photo Gallery]

Last week, Indiana-based prog metallers The Contortionist came through Warsaw on their fall jaunt across Europe. On the eve of the release of their new EP ‘Our Bones,’ the Hydrozagadka was packed out for a truly memorable show. The air in the venue was electric before the set even began, and as the lights filtered in (to a recording of “I Will Always Love You”, no less) the crowd gave a rousing rendition of their own. The recording faded, and the tension in the air shattered as the show began. Continue reading

Aftershock 2019 Spotlight: THE HU [Video Stream]

*This is part of our “Aftershock Festival 2019 Spotlight” where we branch out and focus on some of the up-and-coming bands that fans can see at this year’s Aftershock Festival on October 11th – 13th.  This week, we’re checking out THE HU*

Mongolian phenomenon, The HU (derived from the Mongolian root word “hu” for human beings) will be bringing their one-of-a-kind brand of “hunnu rock” to Sacramento this October. Infusing elements of Western rock and metal music along with traditional Mongolian instruments (like a horsehead fiddle and Jaw harp) and guttural throat singing, The HU have become online, viral sensations, having already racked up over 22 million views of their two YouTube videos, “Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem” this year. In addition to their rapid rise to Internet fame, The HU – who originally formed in November of 2018 – have been mesmerizing audiences worldwide with their hypnotic beats and powerful stage shows. Just recently, Metal Nexus caught up with The HU at UK’s SWX Bristol. Check out the full show review and photo gallery here. Continue reading

SKUNK ANANSIE And QUEEN ZEE Shakes Up Bristol [Review & Photo Gallery]

The opening act for Skunk Anansie were Liverpool-based rock band Queen Zee who came out to a three-quarters full venue. Looking sharp, their whole image worked well. As I’ve said before, I like to see a band look like a band, and these guys ticked that box. Vocalist and guitarist, Zena “Queen Zee” Davine, was an absolute nutter on stage – full of energy that didn’t wear out for the whole show, rocking a black string vest, and just going for it! Review: WAGE WAR – ‘Pressure’ [Official Videos]

Wage War is back at it again with an album that is sure to be an absolute banger! The band started it’s life in Ocala, Florida with its founding members Briton Bond, Cody Quistad, Seth Blake, Jordan Pierce, and David Rau. Later on swapping the lineup on drums and bass, Stephen Kluesener and Chris Gaylord were added to the mix. They are best described as melodic metalcore. They have some absolutely bouncy riffs but also have smooth clean chorus lines. In the beginning, the band released an EP titled ‘The Fall of Kings.’ Following this, in 2015 they dropped their debut album via Fearless Records; ‘Blueprints.’ This consisted of singles such as “Twenty One,” “Alive,” and “Youngbloods.” Two years later their second album, ‘Deadweight’ dropped with the fan singles being “Stitch,” “Don’t Let Me Fade Away,” and “Witness.” One notable favorite of mine was “Gravity.” This was my introduction to Wage War and the culprit of many, many repeat listens of the ‘Deadweight’ album. This all lead to the unbearable wait for new content when alas, their first new single “Low” released from their newest upcoming album ‘Pressure.’ This album is set to release August 30th, 2019 on Fearless Records. You see a diamond on the album art and pressure helps create diamonds, and that’s exactly what Wage War has created here. Continue reading

Howard Jones On New Blood Has Been Shed Music “I Don’t Know If It’ll Ever See The Light Of Day”

Howard Jones has long been one of metalcore’s stand out vocalists.  From fronting one of the pioneering bands in the genre in Blood Has Been Shed, who’s punishing down tuned odd time signature riffs and spastic delivery is something bands in the scene have long copied.  Jones would go on to replace Jesse Leach in Killswitch Engage and help take that band from the underground to the forefront of the genre with standout albums like Grammy nominated “The End Of Heartache” and “As Daylight Dies”. Mental health issues would see Jones step down from the KSE ranks, subsequently being replaced by the man he replaced in Leach.  Howard would reemerge with a new project in tow, Devil You Know, who would eventually become Light The Torch amid some legal issues with a former member. Light The Torch put out their debut, Revival, in 2018. Continue reading
