State Of The Art: GATECREEPER!

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured State*

                                                                       This month’s State is Arizona!

GATECREEPER is a death metal band out of Tucson & Phoenix Arizona. They formed in 2013 with members Chase Mason on guitar, Metal Matt on drums, and Sean Mears on bass. In the early days they didn’t play a single show – they just wrote songs and recorded them. There was virtually no direction for this self-titled, 4 song EP, released in April of 2014. But, it turned out to be a great idea because they ended up with a fanbase before they played their first show.

MOONSPELL Announce New Album ‘1755’

Metal has always been deeply rooted in history, in terms of content – wars, natural disasters, murder, it’s all there.  But when you take a historical event, line it with poetic melody, and make it the concept for an album, you’ll definitely draw the right kind of attention.  That’s exactly what Portuguese goths, Moonspell, have done on their newly-announced 2017 release ‘1755’, which drops November 3 courtesy of Napalm Records.  The album tells the story of the devastating earthquake that decimated the band’s hometown of Lisbon in 1755, and is entirely in Portuguese! Review: THE ACACIA STRAIN – ‘Gravebloom’ [Official Videos]

The Acacia Strain is a deathcore band from Conneticut, US with some dark yet clear downtempo influences. The band started out really heavy with its first release ‘3750’ in 2004. Albums like ‘The Dead Walk’ and ‘Continent‘ pushed forward the heavy death core, almost death metal, sound the band originally had. The band took a big turn in its sound with the release ‘Wormwood’. The downtempo influences really started to break through on this album. This is also the first album that features the famous ”Bird” on the cover art. Just 2 years later The Acacia Strain let us know that they were still capable of making some kick ass music and so they did with the release of ‘Death Is The Only Mortal’.  Latest and maybe even their best work yet, ‘Coma Witch’, gave us everything we loved about the band. Last year the band collaborated to create ‘The Depression Sessions’ with death core pioneers Thy Art Is Murder. This isn’t all of it yet, Fit For An Autopsy also worked hard on this Split. They are one of the best upcoming death core bands at this very moment, check them out HERE! The long awaited upcoming album ‘Gravebloom’ will release via Rise Records in just 3 days, 30th of June. A new The Acacia Strain is just what we needed in a world full of disappointments!

Chicago Open Air Spotlight: DEVILDRIVER

*Every Tuesday and Thursday from now until Chicago Open Air gets here we will be releasing an article about a band playing the festival to get you familiar with them.*

Today’s artist is DevilDriver.

On Sunday, July 16th, there will be Clouds Over Chicago as DevilDriver hits the BlackCraft Stage at 2:00 at Chicago Open Air. You’ll see in just about any live footage of DevilDriver that they bring ridiculously large mosh pits through their entire set. Dez Fafara is one of the best at making a crowd go crazy. There’s a reason they did two separate US tours with Hatebreed last year. Although he is the only original member left of the band, they still continue to put out fantastic material constantly. They took a short hiatus after releasing their first album via Napalm Record in 2013 (‘Winter Kills’) so Dez could focus on his other incredible band, Coal Chamber. Fafara has even mentioned bringing Coal Chamber material into DevilDriver sets. It would definitely be interesting to see a mix of both of his projects but we will more than likely only get DevilDriver material in Chicago. DevilDriver returned quickly in 2016 with their new album ‘Trust No One’ and have been touring since then. Sunday will include an abundance of moshing with bands like them, Lamb of God, Amon Amarth, and Slayer all hitting the two stages on the same day. Continue reading

The Bucketlist With MIRRORED IMAGE! [Video]

In this series we pose the age old questions to a wide array of music lovers. As fans of music most of us keep a mental list of active bands we want to see live that we haven’t yet seen. The Bucketlist brings to you those lists of your favorite artists and why those bands mean so much to them.

Mirrored Image is a 4 piece band based in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. There isn’t a huge rock scene in the area that is better known for country and bluegrass artists, but Mirrored Image is looking to change that. The Kentuckians boast a true alt rock sound with amazing melodic vocals. The band has a sound that the music world has truly been missing. They have a 90’s alt rock inspired sound but with their own modern twist. Mirrored Image is made up of vocalist and songwriter Dylan Belcher, guitarist and backing vocalist Mark Chaney, drummer Evan Compton and bassist Elijah Purvis. Mirrored Image’s debut album ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’ released in April and the band has been making a name for themselves ever since. The easiest way to describe their sound is to say its 1 part Oasis, 1 part Nirvana, and 1 part Blur and then shake forcefully. They have the songwriting power and vocal harmonies of Oasis, the rawness of Nirvana and the explosive energy of Blur. The band’s debut album kicks off with the song “Mask” and its an incredible starting place for the band showing off everything they have to offer in one track that ends with incredible intensity. They mix things up and every track stands out for a different reason. Though they may remind you of iconic rock bands from the past they truly have their own unique style of music and writing. Several of the tracks on this album quickly get stuck in your head and you have to revisit them just to sing along. This debut by Mirrored Image will leave a lasting reflection on you. Into The Grave Spotlight: EMBER FALLS

Ember Falls is a Finnish metalcore band that I bet you haven’t heard about yet, if you have then you know what we are in for. They released their first ever single ”Shut Down With Me” on the 20th of August 2015 without a record label. As soon as people found out about the song they went crazy, the songwriting is exceptional and their sound is unique. Duo to this huge succes the record label Spinefarm / Universal Music Group got in touch with them and gave them a spot on their label. After this crazy start they decided to release their debut album ‘Welcome To Ember Falls’ and I got to tell you, I do feel very welcome. It got out on the 20th of February this year and it for sure got them higher into the game. (Listen to it on spotify HERE). I have never heard anything similar, really looking forward on hearing them at Into The Grave this August!
