KAMELOT, DELAIN, BATTLE BEAST In Silver Spring, MD [Review & Photo Gallery]

The North American Tour by American power metal band Kamelot came to the Washington DC/Baltimore area recently. This is a tour I really wanted to cover as I am a big symphonic metal fan, and I had not seen  opening act Delain as of yet. On top of that one of the supporting bands was Battle Beast, who I had covered last year when they were supporting Sabaton. The recent album released by Kamelot, ‘The Shadow Theory’, has been very well received by fans and critics alike. Check out our recent review of the album (read here). Let me dive in to the review now, you can check out the photographs at the bottom of the page.

Battle Beast was the first band of the night. If you recall, Battle Beast first captured worldwide attention as the winner of Wacken Metal Battle some years back. They have made big strides over the years since, with the last release ‘Bringer of Pain’ being quite a success. As soon as the lights went out, a drum solo by Pyry Vikki started then proceedings with the lead singer Noora Louhimo bursting in to “Straight to the Heart” followed by “Bringer of Pain”. The lack of a local opening act meant that Battle Beast had a relatively longer setlist including eight songs, and I am not complaining about it at all, bring on more Battle Beast! However, if I recall correctly it was the exact same set list they played last year, and in the same order as well. I would have really liked to see some changes. On the other hand, this was a superior performance compared to the last one, a clear sign of the progress the band has made. The band is a joy to photograph, their energy on stage is simply phenomenal. An energetic performance by Noora Louhimo, with powerful yet melodic vocals, was well backed by the other band members. A fantastic start to the night, and Battle Beast left the stage to a resounding applause from the crowd. We have heard that the band is working on the upcoming album which will be released next year. Well, we can’t wait for that!

Dutch symphonic metal band Delain delivered a set that lasted close to an hour. This would be my first time seeing Delain. The set started with a drum solo, and soon after Charlotte Wessels wasted no time in setting the mood with “Hands of Gold” and “Suckerpunch”. Meren Bechtold was amazing on the guitar. The crowd enthusiastically sang with Charlotte Wessels pretty much throughout the set, and her stage persona lends very well to the kind of music the band plays. Delain wrapped up their set “We Are The Others”, one of my favorite songs by the band. They are in the process of writing a new album, which will be released sometime next year. Charlotte Wessels mentioned that they have been trying to do a US tour every year for the last few years. We will be eagerly waiting for the album and the tour next year.

Kamelot took the stage after a half hour long break after Delain’s set. They started their performance with “Phantom Divine”, the opening track from ‘The Shadow Theory’. The lighting, stage setup and the music generated quite a mood enhancing environment, a stark contrast to that of Battle Beat and Delain. Tommy Karevik took command of the stage and belted out the lyrics amidst his energetic antics on stage. Thomas Youngblood initially stayed near the sides of the stage, letting the other band members take control of the stage. Once the set progressed, he took center stage and blasted out some riffs. Lauren Hart, the vocalist of the death metal band Once Human, provided vocal support with some amazing screams and growls. Kamelot closed their set with “Liar Liar”, possibly their most popular song. The crowd was a happy bunch. I highly recommend this show. The stark differences between the styles of music played by the bands, yet bonded by the melody in the music, lends very well to this show being a resounding success. I have always been a huge fan of tours with bands that herald distinct styles, and this was one of the prime examples of that. Tons of dates are still left, so check out when they are heading your way.

SKELETONWITCH Presents Catchy And Riff Filled New Track, “Fen Of Shadows”!

Hark all ye thrashers! The boys from SKELETONWITCH are back, and have put out a brand new song, “Fen Of Shadows” from their all new, upcoming sixth studio full length, ‘Devouring Radiant Light‘. The brand new album will be out by July 20th, via Prosthetic Records this summer. So be prepared for a fast, technical and murky summer, all thanks to our boys from Athens, Ohio.

Fen Of Shadows” is SKELETONWITCH at it’s best and a true embodiment of what their music feels and holds. It can’t get any better than this. The riffs are catchy, thrash to it’s core, with lots of subtle black metal vibe. And at the same time, it is diverse and has a lot of other exciting stuff going on with it. The song has a brooding and post-metal sort of aura, where it takes you by your neck, but it’s a good feeling, like the one you feel when you walk amidst a misty, cold, dark and windy forest at the dawning of dusk. The tremolo induced shrills and wails will give you the goosebumps that is so inevitable on this track. Vocals are ear piercing and a total blistering force to reckon with, a force equally as fatal as the lightning fast riffing and terror inducing, relentless drumming. Continue reading

HOGAN’S GOAT New Music Video, “Shit Kicker” Truly Gets The Shit Out Of Your Way!

HOGAN’S GOAT from Nashville have a brand new music video out for their track “Shit Kicker“.

We went out to Montana, fucked around, and summoned the spirit of the ‘Shit Kicker.’

No but seriously, from the moment we wrote it, we knew “Shit Kicker” would be the best representation of our style. A song about true grit, unwavering courage, and standing your ground. Our goal was to symbolically showcase the Shit Kicker that lives in all of us; no matter who you are, or where you’re from.

We want to give a special thanks to Walter and Cassie Runsabove, who sat down with us after filming, and gave us a lesson on Native American culture over breakfast. We would also like to thank Curley, Ed Fick, and there rest of the Billings Road Dogs for letting us crash their toy drive, film part of ‘Shit Kicker,’ and play a few songs for them. That wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Montana Mobile Stage and Productions, too! Thanks, Charlie!” – John Salmon (Vocals)

Ep. 150 Max Cavalera 3 (Soulfly) Talk Toomey: The Metal Nexus Podcast

I recently sat down with Max Cavalera before their show in Louisville, KY. Max and I discuss the new Soulfly album and the return to the tribal roots of the band. We discuss his growing up in Brazil and how he and his friends found new music. Max and I talk about his love for the Killer Be Killed project and more.

Also on this episode is co-host Lorin Kozlowski of the Roach Koach podcast. Lorin and I review the Soulfly show, talk Rock n Pod 2 and discuss the Inkcarceration Fest lineup.

Robb Rivera of nonpoint hits us with a Sepultura classic for his weekly Pick From The Kit!

Max Cavalera Describes Upcoming SOULFLY Album as “Tribal Death Thrash”

As a member of one of the pioneering bands in the death/thrash scene of the 80’s and 90’s, Brazilian-born, Max Cavalera was the original vocalist and rhythm guitarist in Sepultura from 1984 to 1996; his brother Igor was the original drummer. Throughout Max’s tenure with Sepultura, he would act as one of the predominant creative forces for pushing the band’s musical style to experimental new territories. Their 1993 release, ‘Chaos A.D.,’ with its groundbreaking industrial/tribal sound, is considered by many to be one of the greatest metal albums of all time. As an industrial metal side project, Cavalera recorded another groundbreaking album, ‘Point Blank’ under the monicker, Nailbomb with Alex Newport of Fudge Tunnel in 1994. Sepultura’s ‘Roots’ LP, released two years later, would further expand upon tribal elements as well as incorporate nu-metal influences that would contribute to creative differences within the group and ultimately to Cavalera’s departure from the band. His leaving would create a rift between the Cavalera brothers as Igor remained on as drummer for Sepultura. Max would then go on to form the tribal/nu-metal outfit, Soulfly in 1997 and has since released ten albums with the band, and one in the works for 2018. In 2007, Max and his brother Igor reconciled and formed the groove/thrash band Cavalera Conspiracy together, along with guitarist, Marc Rizzo of Soulfly. The band has released four albums to date. As part of another side project, Cavalera co-founded the metal supergroup, Killer Be Killed in 2011 along with Greg Puciatio of The Dillinger Escape Plan. The band released their self-titled LP in 2014. Continue reading

Review: MOS GENERATOR – ‘Shadowlands’ [Official Album Stream]

Mos Generator are a heavy riffing trio from Silverdale, WA, who have made it their life’s mission to breathe new life into classic rock.  They revel in the sounds of the 1970’s, with a nod to a progressive era long since taken over by being too inaccessible for casual listeners.

The band has a strong pedigree, comprised as it is by Tony Reed (vocals, guitar, Wurlitzer; ex-Treepeople), Sean Booth (bass), and Jono Garrett (drums).  They came together in 2002 and followed a self-titled debut with a concept album entitled ‘Late Great Planet Earth’ in 2005.  This was followed by several great records, including ‘Nomads’ and ‘Abyssinia’.

Their latest release on Listenable Records is the majestic ‘Shadowlands’.  I am finding it a real pleasure to absorb the grooves and power on this collection.  There is an epic opener in “Shadowlands“, full of riffing and roaring. There is also fuzzbox overdrive on songs like “Drowning In Your Loving Cup” and “Woman Song“.

The songs are compact and lean, swaggering into your consciousness like boxers entering the ring, full of confidence and focus.  What makes them elevate from average to great is the tunefulness that sets them apart from the pack.

Reed makes his mark with a melodic maelstrom of musicality with his ripping guitar and cool walking vocals.  There is the added bonus of solos that don’t outstay their welcome.  It is taste over flash for sure.  The bass playing from Booth is rock solid, but busy and I can only imagine what this band would do live.  When you have a four piece, a busy bass is essential and you get that in spades on ‘Shadowlands’ – just listen to “The Blasting Concept” for a demonstration of Haslip’s skill.  Any review would also be remiss not to make mention of Garrett’s drumming, which drives this album forward.

Combine all of the elements together and you have an album of power, melody and heart.  It is not one dimension and I recommend it highly for all lovers of classic rock, infused with stoner tendencies and superb musicianship.

Jesse Leach Requires Surgery; KILLSWITCH ENGAGE Cancels Tour!

Modern metallers KILLSWITCH ENGAGE in a sudden turn of events have been forced to cancel their upcoming tour from April 26th through May 5th. The unpleasant news has come in the wake of Jesse Leach’s surgery, to fix his vocal chords, an issue that has been stopping him from performing in his full capacity lately. Jesse is expected to pull of a quick full recovery, but to inhibit any damages to his vocal chords for future touring, the band chose to take the hard decision to call the curtains down off a few dates. Here is what the band has to say about the same.

Album Review – RRRAGS [Album Stream]

Belgian/Dutch power trio RRRags came together a mere eight months ago, but the songs on their self-titled debut sound like the work of a band that’s been at this rock and roll game for years and years. The band’s musical telepathy is remarkably refined, and the songs are both well-crafted and catchy as all hell. They hit hard without ever plodding, emphasizing groove and atmosphere over sheer brute strength and mixing their upbeat stoner vibe with flashes of soul, funk, southern rock, and power pop. RRRags are obviously true believers and lifelong devotees, my friends, and they’ve conjured up a slab of classic rock for the here and now.

Review: UNFLESH – ‘Savior’ [Official Video Stream]

Boston-based, extreme metal band, Unflesh is set to release their first full-length studio album, ‘Savior’ on May 25th, 2018. The musical style on this record embodies the aura of black metal wickedness, while infusing technical death metal ferocity and rich, complex melodies in a way that transcend the confinements of a single sub-genre. The riffing is ingeniously intricate and inspired, vocals are venomous and vile, but those drums! The hyper aggressive drumming performance on ‘Savior’ is utterly relentless and impressive thanks to the otherworldly kit skills of drummer, Chris Dovas (Seven Spires). Not to diminish the other elements, which are arguably just as awesome, but what Dovas so phenominally brings to this record is almost its own selling point. Continue reading

Review: STRYPER – ‘God Damn Evil’ [Official Video Stream]

Legendary Christian rock band, Stryper, are coming back with a brand-new album to add to their discography. ‘God Damn Evil’ is the title and it will be released on Frontiers Music SRL April 20th , 2018. Stryper’s current members are Michael Sweet (vocals, guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Perry Richardson (bass), and Robert Sweet (drums).  It’s amazing to think that Perry Richardson is the new bassist for Stryper. Being a bassist for the 1990’s glam band, Firehouse, it’s mind blowing to think that in the future, Perry would stand along with Michael and Oz. Continue reading
