ANGELS & AIRWAVES Bring Alt Rock To Charlotte [Review & Photo Gallery]

It’s been seven years since Angels and Airwaves toured, and six since they played a live show together. The alt-rock super group is made up of Tom DeLonge (Blink 182, Boxcar Racer), David Kennedy (Boxcar Racer, Over My Dead Body, Hazen Street), and Ilan Rubin (Nine Inch Nails, Paramore (studio), LostProphets, the New Regime). The band stopped by the Fillmore in Charlotte, NC, and played a stacked set to packed house of fans that’ve been waiting patiently for their chance to see them again. They brought two supporting acts on the road with them; LA based alt-rock band, Charming Liars, as well as Ilan Rubin’s solo project, The New Regime. Continue reading

State Of The Art: North Dakota’s FINEST LINE DIVIDES [Album Streams]

*This is part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state. This month’s state is North Dakota.*

Around the year 2000, Nate Hockett, Lance Meoricke, Andy Fuchs, and Josh Renner formed a band they called Memory Work in Bismarck/Mandan, North Dakota. They eventually parted ways with Andy Fuchs, bringing Nick Just in on bass. The band subsequently changed their name to Finest Line Divides. Nick would later move to guitar and Matt Chalcraft would come in for bass duties. They unfortunately broke up in 2002.

10 years later, Nick Just, Lance Meoricke, and Josh Renner decided they wanted to play music again. It started with reworking old songs, which lead to new material being written. Nick would take over vocals and stay on guitar. A friend of the band recommended Keenan Miller for the vacant bass position. In 2013, Lance decided to bow out, which left the band’s future in question. Chris Vetter stepped in.  This led to two releases in 2014 and 2019’s masterwork, ‘The Ghost That’s Chosen Me’.  They are alternative, rock, metal and thoughtful. I absolutely adore the experimental approach and the completely reflective nature of their music.  It is like waking to a vista of vibrant strands of sound and a world that embraces rock, metal, rap, pop and alternative.

MAC SABBATH, OKILLY DOKILLY & PLAYBOY MANBABY Bring the Cheese to Nashville [Review & Photo Gallery]

Mac Sabbath

Sunday night in the heart of the bible belt, about 400 family and friends were observing the Sabbath in one of Nashville’s most iconic places of worship, the Exit/In. Preaching the evils of the fast food industry, “drive thru metal” pioneers Mac Sabbath brought one of the most entertaining tour lineups to the stage that I’ve experienced in my 40+ years on this planet for the American Cheese Tour. Joined by Homer Simpson’s favorite Christian neighbor Ned Flanders, well the five Ned Flanders of Okilly Dokilly to be exact, and fun-loving punk outfit Playboy Manbaby, the mix of raucous comedy and iconic Black Sabbath riffs kept the heads banging and the pit swirling the entire night. KORN Guitarist “I’m So Glad Jonathan Fell in Love With Heavy Music Again”

Brian “Head” Welch is most known as one of the founding members of nu metal pioneers Korn. Brian has enjoyed lots of success in Korn, from winning Grammy’s and having one of the most successful albums of the late 90’s in “Follow The Leader”.  Despite all that success Welch struggled with drug and alcohol abuse and eventually left Korn to focus on his sobriety and new found faith.  Eventually Brian would rejoin Korn, and release 3 albums with them, including their most recent The Nothing, as well as putting out a documentary, Loud Krazy Love that showcased his time away from the band, rebounding with his daughter and how he ended up mending fences with his Korn brothers. Watch OVTLIER’s All New Groovy, Melodic And Harrowing Music Video, ‘Spineless’

OVTLIER from Rochester, New York are one of the most talked about new metalcore bands in town. It is justified that the sick yet amazing music that they create makes them worthy of all the attention that they are thrown at. OVTLIER has just released a new single that goes by the name, ‘Spineless‘ and oh boy, the music video is intense. The video contains disturbing imagery, so proceed with caution.

It talks about the horrors of the healthcare or drug industry. The new song is some thing nu metal fans can directly cling on to as there are sections the band goes out all guns blazing and then there are certain complimentary parts where they all even out the aggression by taking to clean vocals and anthem-esque melody. Both of the vibes go hand in hand pretty darn well.

LOUDER THAN LIFE 2019: Dissecting The Daily Schedules

We’re a scant week-and-a-half from the return of LOUDER THAN LIFE, one of the nation’s premiere hard rock/heavy metal events. After flooding cruelly scuttled last year’s festivities, Danny Wimmer Presents worked with the city of Louisville to find a new home for the festival, settling on the Kentucky Expo Center’s Highland Festival Grounds (with “highland” being, hopefully, the operative word). 2019’s potent lineup packs some major firepower, with headliners GUNS N’ ROSES, SLIPKNOT, and DISTURBED alongside an array of current acts like HALESTORM, A DAY TO REMEMBER, and IN THIS MOMENT, rising stars such as DIRTY HONEY and CROWN LANDS, and metal mainstays like ROB ZOMBIE, GODSMACK, and MARILYN MANSON. A lineup of this magnitude will invariably force punters to make some hard choices between this band on that stage and that band on this stage; after poring over this year’s daily schedules, here are some of the weekend’s biggest scheduling snafus and how your intrepid reporter plans to unravel them.
