Review: BWAK DWAGON – ‘Underground and Passed Around’ [Album Stream]

BWAK DWAGON was forged in the rock n roll town of Cleveland, Ohio. The three piece band is made up of Matthew Clement on drums and vocals, Dave Busch on guitar, and Jason Robinson on bass. Together, they mix heavy riffs with haunting tones and lyrics. This powerful trio has plenty to offer and though this band may be small in numbers they are big in sound. The band released their self-titled debut album in 2014 and was released independently by the band. It is also now available on vinyl via Gotta Groove Records, I might add. The debut was recorded by Paul Maccarrone (Obnox) at 71st Door in Cleveland, OH and mastered by Charlie Loudin (The Pistolettes) at My Other Car Is The Space Time Continuum in Kent, OH. The band of course has had a strong string of live performances in and around the Cleveland area and has quickly garnered attention for their heavy and haunting sound. Just 2 years later the band has released a follow up to their debut titled ‘Plum Island’ which released in September of 2016. The band coming off the heels of a successful first album again went to Paul Maccarrone for recording and Charlie Loudin for mastering. The lyrical content is one of the strongest points within the Bwak Dwagon sound and those words are brought to life on paper and in voice by Matthew Clement. It’s not often we get a chance to hear the drummer show off his pipes while also beating his drum kit to shreds but Clement is able to easily accomplish this. The band’s brand new release is ‘Underground and Passed Around’ which released on January 26, 2019. Bwak Dwagon recorded the new album again with local producer Paul Maccarronne and again locally based Gotta Groove Records to press the vinyl. However, this album includes 3-D glasses to enhance the album art. “The color scheme [of the album art] has a lot of red and blue to it,” Clement explained to CleveScene. “There happened to be a pair of 3-D glasses in the room, and when we tried them on, the artwork looked great, so we decided to include a pair with the album. We have a gimmick of some sort with each record.” ‘Underground and Passed Around’ includes 12 well thought out tracks. Continue reading

Epicenter Festival Spotlight: BLACK COFFEE

*This is part of the Epicenter Festival Spotlight segment where we help you get to know some of the non-headlining bands performing at the festival. This week we introduce you to Black Coffee!*

Black Coffee formed in early 2017 after drummer Tommy McCullough introduced singer/bassist, Ehab Omran, to guitarist Justin Young. Within the first few days, these artists began songwriting and the chemistry was overwhelmingly apparent. With the release of Black Coffee’s debut album, ‘Take One’, on April 21st, the Columbus, Ohio rockers definitely possess the sound, style, confidence and work ethic that created legends in music in the previous few decades. The bands style is slightly retro rock and with the recent success of bands like Greta Van Fleet, The Struts and Rival Sons they have timed the formation of the band perfectly. Black Coffee are a band that certainly appreciates a good riff and you will easily notice how they flaunt their guitarists talents within their music. Ehab Omran’s vocals pack immense power into such a small frame. He sings in a melodic manner but also at times can wail with an aggressive grit to his voice as well. The band unveiled a music video for “I Barely Know Her”. The song and accompanying video was the first taste of Black Coffee that we would receive and it sent music fans into a whirlwind. The video was filmed at the Johnstown Opera House in Johnstown, Ohio. “I Barely Know Her” was filmed, directed and produced by the extremely talented John Payne of Payne Productions, who is one of the most talented photographers in and around Columbus, Ohio. With the attitude of the years gone by and the sound of a new resurgence of the classic rock, Black Coffee parts the proverbial sea for the next generation of artists. State Of The Art: Hawaii’s KINGS OF SPADE [Official Videos]

*This is part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state. This month’s state is Hawaii.*

Today we are leaving mainland U.S.A to talk about one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets Kings Of Spade! The band founded back in 2008 in  Honolulu, Hawaii. They were previously named X Factor but later changed their name to Kings Of Spade. The band was built around the bluesy vocal prowess of KC and the rest of the band is equally as impressive creating a psychedelic rock sound that will have you re-living the heyday of rock n roll. Kings Of Spade is filled out with Jesse Savio on guitar, Matt Kato on drums, Tim Corker and on bass, auxiliary members include  Ken Lykes  on the keys and DJ Packo. The band has played the mainland on several occasions including SXSW. I personally became familiar with the band after speaking with former Headbangers Ball host Riki Rachtman when he mentioned how impressed he was with the band during a conversation at Carolina Rebellion in 2017. The band since has became even more well known to fans even outside of the island state of Hawaii. On December 8th they were tapped to be the opening band for Guns N Roses first ever performance in Hawaii. So prior to Guns N Roses kicking off their 3 hour set Kings Of Spade got the packed crowd at Aloha stadium pumped up.  Continue reading

Pat O’Brien May Be Sentenced

Cannibal Corpse guitarist Pat O’Brien was put under arrest near his house in Florida situated in Northdale. The house was set on fire and ammunition present on the property was exploding inside. The situation happened during the night on the 11th of December. The neighbors spotted the fire rising in the house of Pat O’Brien on Monday evening. Firemen were able to cope with the fire within one hour, however, their work was hampered by exploding ammunition that was inside the house all of the time. Though not confirmed, it is suspected that the ammo was improperly stored which lead to the fire becoming more dangerous. Some have stressed the importance of proper ammunition storage so that incidents like this are not repeated (see this site for more information).

Actual Facts

The police report, done after O’Brien was apprehended, states that he broke into a neighboring house and was refusing to leave it. It was made clear that he wasn’t permitted to be there by the owner and his relatives living there. According to the statement, he took the owner deep into the house, while he himself went to the backyard. Sheriff’s assistants found O’Brien behind the fence near his house, while he threatened them with a knife. In relation to O’Brien, a case has been filed involving the infiltration of someone else’s home, as well as for the aggravated assault on a police officer and the assault of a civilian.

The area was sealed off by the firemen and they remained at the site of the fire during the whole night even after its liquidation. The artist broke into his neighbor’s house and knocked her to the floor while his house was on fire and then ammunition exploded. When a policeman appeared at the scene, O’Brien attempted to attack him with a knife but was stopped with a stun gun.

On Wednesday, O’Brien was in the court, and a pledge of 50 thousand dollars was set on him. Afterward, the authorities decided to check him for the presence of narcotic substances in his body. A witness to the incident stated that the musician had hallucinations because he spoke of “ecstasy” and claimed that someone was following him. O’Brien allegedly even tried to hide in a closet in the house, which he broke into.

Conclusion

Pat O’Brien has been playing at Cannibal Corpse since 1997, and he took part in recording six albums. The Cannibal Corpse group was founded in 1988 and has about 12 studio albums in their discography. Cannibal Corpse is considered the most commercially successful death metal band in the world. On Monday, the band announced that they would join SLAYER as part of their farewell tour.
