State of the Art: New Jersey’s BLACK WAIL

Our autumnal excursion through the Garden State concludes in Jersey City, home of the Statue of Liberty, birthplace of funk legends Kool & the Gang, and for nearly four years now, home to chromium swamp creatures Black Wail. These fuzz-faced, big-muffed purveyors of doom boogie have been plying their wares since Spring 2014, over three EP releases and countless live shows, and their forthcoming effort Chromium Homes (Rhyme & Reason Records, in stores December 15) is a raw, rip-snorting blast of sharp hooks, bludgeoning riffs, syrupy-sweet harmonies, and out-and-out heavy metal anguish.

State Of The Art: BINARY CODE! [Official Album Stream]

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state*
This month’s state is New Jersey!

Binary Code is a progressive metalband from, how suprising, New Jersey. They have been making stellar music since 2010 starting with ‘Priest’ which is, to me, one of the better progressive records I have heard in a while. But don’t worry, the flame hasn’t died yet. Last year, May 24, they restarted the engine by firing up the full album ‘Moonsblood’. So without further ado, let’s dig right into this masterpiece of a band!

State Of The Art: REPLACIRE [Full Album Stream]

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state*

This month’s state is Massachusetts’!

It’s time once again to shake off those Monday blues with an absolute earth-shaker of a band that are completely redefining the new-wave of technical death metal. Hailing from MA’s capital Boston are technical death metallers Replacire. Already described as “a new breath of life for the death metal genre”, Replacire have been taking the aggressiveness and complexity of modern death metal and infusing it with beautifully intricate progressive elements and technical complexity. Think of a masterminded cosmic mutation that would ensue from the intense atmosphere and progressiveness of Mikael Åkerfeldts Opeth, mixed with Obscuras and Beyond Creations technical virtuosity and death growls, with Katatonias haunting cleans and dynamacism. Whilst this may sound in print like it has been done to death (pun-intended), Replacire stand out from the sea of other technical metal artists and are certainly at the head of the pack. Who ever said that metal was dead clearly has no idea what they’re talking about, with young blood like this keeping death fresh and feeding our bloodthirsty desires, Replacire are redefining an already extensively innovative genre and they are certainly the ones to be keeping an eye on!

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state*

This month’s state is Alaska!

Hey metalheads of the pale blue dot! I am back with another State Of The Art write up this Monday to shoot some energy in you, so that you don’t have to whine about how this specific Monday is more boring than the previous one was. Anyways, let’s cut to the chase, and let me have the honor of presenting you one of the very promising bands from the extreme north of United States, battling the cold, dark and grim weather. Let’s give it up for MALSUMIS people! Hailing from the largest city in Alaska, Anchorage, MALSUMIS are a black metal band spawning from the misty, cold and bleak wintery landscapes of America’s Northern most state, just a year ago in 2016, and they successfully have garnered a lot of attention already, while still in its infancy. Mad props to them on that!

State Of The Art – AWAKEN ANTAGONIST

Welcome back to a brand new State Of The Art, we decided to pick Alaska this month due to the crazy scene going on so let’s get started!

Awaken Antagonist is the very first band to be featured this month and it is a blend of the greatest parts of deathcore and metal. They have only released their debut (which is self titled) and recently they have released their first full album which goes by the name of ‘Shepherd Of Plagues’. It got out via bandcamp on the 28th of July and on their official youtube page on the 5th of September. The transition between the 2 music pieces are fenomenal, the debut is one of the best I have heard but their full album blows me away. They matured so much just after their first piece that it is almost unbelievable. Check the album art below (made by Art and Layout by Soul Asphyx Arts), it is violent!

State Of The Art – RUSSIAN CIRCLES

Welcome to this week’s state of the art! I’m proud to introduce you to the Chicago, Illinois instrumental metal band RUSSIAN CIRCLES: a metal outfit that isn’t constrained by the conventional rules many other metal bands religiously adhere to. Where most metal musicians try to pummel the listener with heavy riffs and pure aggression, instrumental trio RUSSIAN CIRCLES (which formed in 2004 and consists of guitarist Mike Sullivan, bassist Brian Cooke, and drummer Dave Turncrantz) opt for the more subtle and nuanced approach of creating music that emphasizes atmospherics over pure brutality, and the result is emotionally stirring heavy metal that ferries the listener on a musical journey through spiritual highs and lows.

They were founded in the fall of 2014, and they have set out to create music that is different from what is already available. SPIT consists of  the assaulting vocals of Petros Massouros, Tom Aparici and Tyler Gargula shredding on guitars, Jimmy McClanahan providing those crunchy bass lines, and  Brian Martinez tearing it up on drums. With their influences ranging from traditional metal music all the way to the new and aggressive sounds of hardcore, SPIT is working for something new to offer, with the hopes of continuing to play music to all who are interested.

State of the Art: BEG FOR LIFE

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured State*

This month’s state is Arizona!

We are on our final week of State of the Art in the great state of Arizona! There’s no better way to end it then with Yuma’s Beg For Life. The band was formed in 2006 and refers to their genre on Bandcamp as “Prison Hill Hardcore”. The band released their only full length in 2009 titled ‘Doomed’. It comes at you with full force for the entirety of the record. You can check out their video they did for “Means To An End” (the opener on the record) below. Three years later, the band released their EP ‘Mare Miseria’. The four songs on the EP showed the band’s capability to become heavier, faster, and better as they continued. Both records were released via Westcoast Worldwide Records. The band has been somewhat inactive since then, but it appears that they are gearing up for more music soon. Continue reading
