Carolina Rebellion: Friday Review & Photo Gallery

HELLYEAH 11

Chad Grey – Hell Yeah

Carolina Rebellion has become one of the biggest festivals in the country and is 2nd only to Rock on the Range. This year the North Carolina based festival was bumped up to 3 days instead of the normal 2. In doing that this year became the most attended Carolina Rebellion ever. So if you were there as well you were part of the 90,000 people that helped set the record. The festival takes place in Concord, North Carolina at Rock City Campgrounds which is part of the Charlotte Motor Speedway area. The lineup was very thought out to draw fans of all ages who like music from various metal and rock genres. The festival shows its ability to have a wide range of acts that’s music is very different. Day 1 included some acts that would welcome some old school rock and metal heads. Headliners were Lynyrd Skynyrd and Scorpions for the first day. Originally Texas rock n rollers ZZ Top were also supposed to be there, but had to bow out do to an injury to bass player Dusty Hill. Festivals like these are the only place you will ever find Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cypress Hill, Anthrax, Baby Metal and August Burns Red all playing the same event. The only bad thing about their being 20+ bands per day at an event is having to miss a few bands here and there due to overlapping or the distance in the stages. The greatest things about overlapping though is the ability to choose who you want to see. Sometimes it works out in your favor and you can skip a band you don’t want to see and other times you have to pick between two amazing bands like I had to do a couple times. You can’t always see every band there. Continue reading

On June 24th, Whitechapel will release their sixth full-length, Mark of the Blade, worldwide via Metal Blade Records. Reunited with producer Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Cannibal Corpse), Whitechapel has redefined who they are and what they are capable of with their new album, Mark of the Blade. Kicking off with “The Void” – which has a Slayer-esque ferocity that is perfectly suited to the band’s three-guitar attack – the songs that follow all leave a distinct impression, and by the time the rich, dark melodies on “Decennium” bring the record to a close, it’s impossible to deny the emotional weight brought to bear. Red Hot Chili Peppers was on stage in front of a sold-out crowd Saturday night, but the band was unable to play for their fans. The face of the band for the evening was bass player Flea who announced the show in Irvine, California, wouldn’t go on. Iconic frontman Anthony Kiedis, 53, was heading to the hospital, Flea told the crowd. He was suffering from ‘extreme stomach pain’ which may have turned out to be “complications from the intestinal flu” . Under Pike Skies hails from the heart of Eastern Kentucky. The band is comprised of 5 individuals with very diverse musical influences. Their sound can’t really be put into any single genre. The band has various acoustic songs that have really become fan favorites, but they also electrify things with some melt your face off metal as well. The way that the bands songs vary in sound so drastically makes their music all that much more appealing. You will never hear two songs that sound alike from these guys. Singer Brandon Leslie has this gravely voice that is different than anything else you may have heard recently. His vocals are rough yet pleasing to the ear. Backing vocals are sang by drummer and sometimes mandolin player Anthony Sturgill. His vocals are the opposite to Brandon’s, but they play off one another in perfect harmony. Bassist Tyler Coleman creates these thundering bass lines to contrast with the guitars and helps keep the tempo of the songs on track. The band is jam packed with talent as guitar players Cody Compton and Sean Lindsey are constantly picking away and even breaking out acoustic solos that will blow your mind. The song writing talent of the band is also a major contributor to their success thus far. Living in this area of the Appalachian Mountains has only fed their souls the motivation to sing their way out of the mountains and to a town near you. The band was recently showcased on Eastern Kentucky Broadcasting’s Mountain Music segment where the band played part of their song “Change” and talked briefly about the inspiration of the song. If you have yet to hear Under Pike Skies I urge you to check them out. Their next show is May 21st at 10pm in Elkhorn City, Kentucky at The Apple Blossom Festival.

(We would also like to thank Sean for sporting his Metal Nexus as well)

Katatonia Release Lyric Video From Upcoming Album ‘The Fall of Hearts’

katatonia

We finally get a taste of Katatonia’s upcoming album ‘The Fall of Hearts’ which is being released via Peaceville on May 20th. The song “Serein” is now out in lyric video form. The song is more of what Katatonia has been doing for years. Emotional lyrics, beautiful heavy music, and it’s all driven home with a great group of musicians. I’m sure the melodic metal will be another hit just like their previous releases. Jonas Renkse has one of the most emotionally charged melodic voices in metal today. You can feel the passion in his voice as he sings. The ‘Fall of Hearts’, the official follow-up to 2012’s acclaimed ‘Dead End Kings’, was recorded at Stockholm’s Studio Gröndahl and Tri-lamb Studio, and was self-produced by Katatonia’s Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse. Mixing and mastering duties were carried out by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Ihsahn, Devin Townsend) at Fascination Street Studios, with Karl Daniel Lidén (Switchblade, The Ocean, Greenleaf) brought in as engineer.
