Review: MUDDY LEAF – ‘Distorted & Wild’ [Album Stream]

By Aidan Burdinie | February 12, 2020 - 8:29 pm |February 12, 2020 Album Reviews

Muddy Leaf is a new and upcoming post-metal band from Tours, France that formed in 2014. The band’s first release was ‘Writing 1.0’ in 2016. The five piece band has now put the final touches on their sophomore release ‘Distorted & Wild’ mastered by Clément Dalmange, Muddy Leaf are sounding great from the start. The band is comprised of Djouk on lead vocals, Benoît and Guigz on guitars, Fwash on the bass, and William rounding out the band on drums. ‘Distorted & Wild’ is an extremely promising debut record. These tracks are cloudy and wrap around the ears of the listener. ‘Distorted & Wild’ was released February 5th, 2020.

Interview: Justin Graves of VEXES [Audio Stream]

By Steve Savage | February 22, 2018 - 6:10 am |February 22, 2018 Interviews
Comments Off on Interview: Justin Graves of VEXES [Audio Stream]

I recently had the great pleasure of interviewing Justin Graves, drummer for the band Vexes; who are about to release their full-length debut album, ‘Ancient Geometry’ tomorrow, February 23, 2018.  Metal Nexus also featured a review of the album last month which, in case you missed it, you can check out here.

During our conversation, Justin shared some great insights into the band’s writing and recording process with me, as well as what’s to come for Vexes in the future, and more.

Vexes originally formed in 2016 from the ashes of A Life Once Lost, Vessl, Fury of Five, and Downstage.  Lineup consists of Charlie Berezansky (vocals/guitar/keyboard), Justin Graves (drums), John Klagholz (guitar/keyboard), and Bobby Carpenter (bass).  Their sound is modern but proudly pays homage to their 90’s influences including Deftones, Cave In, Thrice, and Helmet.  For those of us who grew up in the era from where much of this music draws its inspiration, listening to this album will bring a warm sense of nostalgia as it transports you back into high school with your baggy jeans and Puma Suedes.  For newcomers, expect a moody and oftentimes melancholic hard rock/metal experience with powerfully melodic choruses and crooning vocals.  Continue reading →

This month’s state is Vermont!

“This band is so f**king good that I’ve already booked them for my funeral!!!” – Tim Morse (Anal Cunt/Horrible Earth)

Welcome to Februarys ‘State of the Art’! I thought I’d kick off the month with a band that will literally “eat you for breakfast”. From Chester, Vermont let me welcome the instrumental hardcore powerhouse that is The Aberration. The metal duo are made up of guitarist Travis O’Connell and drummer Jim Cole – proving that small can be big and mark my word, these guys can make one hell of a noise! The self-proclaimed “instrumental progressive, birth metal! Get off your ass and move now metal!” outfit formed in 2007, starting out like most bands in a filthy four walled-cement basement. They have performed most notably as support to Marc Rizzo and the Corrupters (of Soulfly, Misfits, Cavalera Conspiracy, & Ill Nino fame) alongside Urn, and have played festivals such as New England Blood Fest and Hothfest. New Jersey post-metal band, Vexes is set to release their exciting full-length debut album, ‘Ancient Geometry’ on February 23, 2018.  The band originally formed in 2016, “from the ashes of A Life Once Lost, Vessl, Fury of Five, and Downstage,” according to their webpage. Review: WITH OUR ARMS TO THE SUN – ‘Orenda’ [Album Stream]

By Steve Savage | December 16, 2017 - 5:42 pm |December 16, 2017 Album Reviews
Comments Off on Review: WITH OUR ARMS TO THE SUN – ‘Orenda’ [Album Stream]

‘Orenda,’ the latest release by Arizona-originated, post-metal band, WITH OUR ARMS TO THE SUN is a spacey, dreamy, melodic metal journey to tranquility.  As far as metal goes, this is pretty soothing and mellow stuff.  Where a band like SLAYER would make you want to get into the mosh pit and bash skulls in, this is the type of metal, by comparison, that you could read a book to, relax on the couch to after a few healthy bong rips while staring at your black light posters (do those still exist?), or maybe even do a nice yoga session to – hot yoga to keep it more “metal” of course.

Formed in 2012, the Arizona post-metal band has released three full-length studio albums and one EP.  Vocalist, Josh Breckenridge originally started the band as a solo project, but then after recruiting his brother Joseph Breckenridge Jr. to play bass, and longtime friend Joseph Leary on guitar, they released their first EP, ‘Delicate Union of Minds’ in 2013.

Formed in 2000 Swiss metal band Palmer are a band that creates massive depth within their sound. Palmer has been forging their sound towards perfection for the last 16 years. This Swiss quartet is no typical four-four time metalcombo straight off the rack. Their strength comes from their ability to work as one cohesive unit. No member is more talented than the other and they shine as one entity. Palmer works intuitively and without restraints and their creations reflect an energy of immediate presence. Somewhere between post-metal and prog-rock the band has truly found their space in the metal world. The band released their debut in 2007 via Czar of Crickets titled ‘This One Goes To Eleven’, they followed that album up with ‘Momentum’ in 2011 this time releasing their work via Subversiv Records. The band of course takes ample time between albums, creating perfection takes time you know. Palmer has released their latest LP ‘Surrounding The Void’ on February 24th, 2017. It marks the bands return to Czar of Crickets as well. Continue reading →
