State Of The Art: Pennsylvania – BURIAL IN THE SKY

*This is part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured State*

This month’s State is Pennsylvania!

There was a plethora of great releases in the tech death realms last year. Obviously, not all of those technical death metal albums of 2016 were shown the love they deserve on Metal Nexus… With that said, I am currently kicking myself in the ass for not covering Burial In The Sky’s jaw-dropping debut LP last year. The absolute least I can do now is have Burial In The Sky as the first featured artist for this month’s State of the Art: Pennsylvania series! Since the band was birthed in 2013, they have only delivered solid material. Now – with a demo, EP, and full-length, under their belts – the future could not look any brighter for Burial In The Sky. The Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania natives, Will Okronglis (guitars, vocals), James Tomedi (guitars, bass) and Sam Stewart (drums), produce a unique brand of death metal with appeasing, technical guitar licks and a dreamy, celestial atmosphere.

GORGUTS Plan Tour Of The States With DEFEATED SANITY & EXIST in June; Canadian Dates W/ DYSRYTHMIA Next Month!

Defeated Sanity’s Facebook page had hinted at a major announcement coming, but I did not expect anything as huge as this! Without a doubt, this has to be one of, if not THE, sickest North American tour happening this summer. And its official, folks – Gorguts will be trekking across the states with both Defeated Sanity and Exist! Perhaps Metal Nexus will be covering one of these shows??

Making their return to the Western hemisphere, Gorguts are fresh off the roads of Australia and New Zealand, having toured down under with Marduk throughout this month of March. Now before the tech death legends embark on this tour of the states, they will be heading out next month for some Canadian dates with Dysrhythmia, the prog metallers who share members with the reincarnated Gorguts. Ultimately, Luc Lemay and the gang will be headlining Covenant Montreal which takes place April 13th-15th – this festival is sister to Covenant Festival in Vancouver, both of which are weekend gatherings to celebrate the music of Death with performances by multiple extreme metal bands, comprising lineups that can be found here. After this tour of their homeland, Gorguts is state-bound, kicking things off in Syracuse at Lost Horizon on June 3rd. Rest assured, I think we can expect to hear some of the critically acclaimed Pleiades’ Dust EP performed on this tour! Continue reading

Review: MEMORIAM – ‘For The Fallen’

Following the death of drummer Martin “Kiddie” Kearns, old school death metal band Bolt Thrower came to its end in 2016. A few weeks later, Frank Healy’s (Benediction) father passed away. Since then, Bolt Thrower vocalist Karl Willets and Healy have joined forces to create a new project featuring members of Benediction, Life Denied, and Bolt Thrower. Memoriam is in a similar vein to Bolt Thrower boasting their brutal death metal sound and super heavy guitar tone. Their main focuses in their songs are on themes like death, loss, and war. The UK band formed in 2016 and has since released two demos. The first full length album, ‘For the Fallen’ is set to be released via Nuclear Blast Records on March 24th. The album was recorded in about two weeks at Hellfire Studios but took four weeks to get the mix finished exactly as they wanted it done. ‘For the Fallen’ was produced by Ajeet Gill (Hellbastard, Dark Forest, Element) and artwork was created by Dan Seagrave (Benediction, Dismember, Hypocrisy, Suffocation). You can pre-order the album here.    Continue reading

NECROPHAGIST Vinyl Reissue Of “Epitaph” Arrives Via Relapse Records

Well, my friends… The time has come. Relapse Records has now released the long-awaited vinyl reissue of Necrophagist’s Epitaph– the monumental second album by the technical death metal titans. It’s been over a decade since this masterpiece has seen an analog release, and I know it will be a great pleasure for Necrophagist followers to spin this timeless gem on the phono. I, myself, did not preorder the LP via Relapse, as money is tight at the moment; however, I do envy those who are spinning Epitaph today. It has to be refreshing to hear an official, newly pressed release from the innovative tech death masters. Without a doubt, the announcement of the Epitaph reissue ignited a small spark of optimism within all of our pessimistic hearts – that we may someday hear new material from the beast that is Necrophagist. CONDEMNED – His Divine Shadow LP Review (+Stream!)

I’m no expert in brutality, but I do enjoy the occasional brutal death metal album. With that said – when I happen to be in the brutal mood per se, I REALLY enjoy the blast beats and guttural-infested vocals that are such distinguishing staples of the subgenre. So enough about my white belt in all things gore; let’s plunge head first into Unique Leader Records’ latest offering of death in Condemned’s third full length, His Divine Shadow. Founding member, Steve Crow, delivers some of the sickest riffs I’ve heard all year on this wooly mammoth of an album. Plus, His Divine Shadow is Condemned’s first LP to feature newer members – bassist Ryan Tyler, vocalist Sam Townsley, and drummer Tyson Jupin.  Continue reading

Finnish progressive metal band Damnation Plan are here in 2017 to release a masterpiece for the masses. Damnation Plan formed in 2004 in Espoo, Finland. The band released their first EP in 2007, ‘Darker World’. They took a little bit of a hiatus after that but then regrouped in 2011 to begin work on their first full length album. In 2013, that album, ‘The Wakening’, was released on Coroner Records. The lineup of the band has not changed since 2012 and consists of: Tommy Tuovinen doing harsh and clean vocals, Asim Searah also on clean vocals, Antti Lauri and Kalle Niininen on guitars, Jukka Vehkamaa on bass, and Jarkko Lunnas on drums. Starting work on this new record almost two years ago, the time has finally come. Damnation Plan’s second full length album, ‘Reality Illusion’ will be dropping on March 10th 2017 on Inverse Records. Review: EX DEO – ‘The Immortal Wars’

After what has seemed like forever, Canadian death metal band Ex Deo has returned to bless us with their third full length release, ‘The Immortal Wars’. After releasing ‘Caligvla’ in 2012 with a bit of touring, the band decided it was time for a break in 2014. It was soon being reported that the return of the band was unlikely. Lead singer Maurizio Iacono, Jean-Francois Dagenais, Oli Beaudoin, and Stéphane Barbe went back to their main project in Kataklysm. Also featured in the band is Jonathan Leduc on the keyboards and François Mongrain on the bass guitar. Only a year later in 2015, the band announced that they were to begin work on their follow up. In January of 2016, it was revealed that the band’s next release would be titled ‘The Immortal Wars’. It has been a long road since then, but the time has finally come. On February 24th, 2017, Ex Deo will be releasing the album on Napalm Records. It was produced and mixed by Jens Bogren in Sweden. The Roman themed heavy metal band is prepared to unleash hell. You can preorder the new album here. Continue reading
