The Technical Metal band Oni recently dropped my jaw when opening for Max & Iggor Cavalera on their Return to Roots tour in Tampa (my review to follow shortly). Recently signed with Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records, Oni has just announced the release of their debut album entitled Ironside on Black Friday, November 25th.

SEPTEMBER 27TH, 1986 is a day that forever changed the music world and the lives of many. 30 years ago on this day Cliff Burton’s life was taken far too soon. Metallica was touring in Europe. Cliff won a card game which gave him the power to chose his bunk that night. He chose to sleep in guitarist Kirk Hammet’s bunk, and Kirk was to sleep in the front of the bus. While traveling to the next city their bus crashed in the early hours of September 27th, 1986 in Sweden. Cliff was thrown out the window of the bus. The whole band was distraught by the tragedy. Though he was only 24 years old Cliff’s time with Metallica had made a huge impact on music. His playing style captivated audiences around the world. Metallica had just released ‘Master of Puppets’, their third album and first for a major label, Elektra Records. The album was a showcase for Burton’s signature playing style. The album went gold, selling over six million copies world wide. A complete success. Burton’s music has inspired many. He not only inspired fans but also was revered by fellow musicians as well. Cliff has even inspired bassists that wasn’t alive at the time of his death. Through videos and live footage like ‘Cliff Em All’ those born well after his death are able to experience the legend and his passion for music. From the grave he is able to inspire many to create music. We can’t imagine how his music would have progressed over time. Metallica has had very talented bassists since his passing but no one will ever hold a flame to Cliff Burton. He personified bass playing. On this day we celebrate the life of Cliff Burton, he has been gone for 30 years and though he lays at rest now, his soul and his music is forever immortalized and lives on in his music and everyone he’s inspired.  Syracuse-based metal outfit FREYA have unleashed the track “Gnawing From Inside” from the band’s impending fifth full-length, Grim. The new single is like a delicacy that music fans will love. The album nears release at the end of the month. The band has issued the early single for public consumption, and it certainly should make fans even more anxious for the release. The song is pleasing to the ear with the vast sounds and styles this track showcases. “Gnawing From Inside” is just a small tease of what to expect from the full length, and their is plenty more to come. Today, the band has debuted a very “N.S.F.W.” video for the track “Plata O Plomo”. The term “Plata O Plomo” was popularized by Mexican and South American drug cartel leaders such as Pablo Escobar and translates into “silver or lead?”. 11. Zach de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine.

News broke not so long ago about Prophets Of Rage, which features all the members of Rage Against The Machine except Zack. On vocals is Cypress Hill’s B-Real and Chuck D of Public Enemy. When the symbols started showing up people knew it was something related to RATM, but were left to wonder exactly what it was. Many of us kept our fingers crossed that the original RATM was reuniting. It wasn’t that far fetched. I mean Guns N Roses and The Misfits both have reunited this year. Tom Morello stated in an interview that they spoke with Zack prior to the formation and received his blessing to proceed. Tom also stated that Zack was working on his own music currently. The anticipation since then has been overwhelming, not knowing when Zack would release new material. That time came yesterday as he released his brand new song ‘Digging For Windows’. The song showcases Zack’s powerful and groove filled vocals along with backing beats. The power in his vocals is something that can’t be copied or imitated. There is only one Zack De La Rocha; and he is back. While we all may wish the band was back together this is the next best thing. We have Zack doing his own thing and the other guys doing Prophets of Rage. Angels on the Battlefield has been on my band list for a while now.  I have listened to their EP countless times (you can download it FREE on Angels on the Battlefield); always finding some nuance that I had missed before or changing color based on my mood and/or situation.  Three songs that I just cannot seem to wear out or get out of my head.  This is definitely my kind of music!  Intelligent, melodic and unique.  Once I started work on the article and doing research, I was offered an interview with one of the best instrumental bands out there by their manager Alex Rodrigues and jumped at the chance.  Hell yeah!  Who wouldn’t like to interview someone you have so much respect for, right?  I absolutely love the music, and after working with them, I am an even bigger fan than before.  As a special treat, we have also been honored with the exclusive introduction of their new single “Leap of Faith” which continues their streak of fierce virtuosity.  So, sit back and read what the brainchild of Angels on the Battlefield, JD McGibney has to say about his bad-ass music and listen to the new single below.  Rock the f*ck out!  Cheers!
