Red Sun Rising, Spirit Animal, & Dubé Rock Tennessee Crowd [Review & Photo Gallery]

Red Sun Rising

It was a great night, a great Sunday night for rock and roll in Johnson City, Tennessee at Capone’s. Red Sun Rising brought along Spirit Animal and dubé for their east Tennessee stop at one of the best venues in the Tri-Cities on the “Together We Are Thread” tour.

dubé

dubé is a Canadian trio from Ottawa that describe themselves as “an indie grunge band”. Why they are still independent is anyone’s guess, because it’s sure not from lack of talent! Holy shit!! They were my surprise of the night! I had watched their music videos and the Metal Nexus interview from earlier this year (see that interview here) but nothing can prepare you for the pure sonic onslaught that these three will knock you in the face with at a live performance! Playing tunes like “Stoned Love” and “Pretty Girls On Bikes” brothers Jan, Liam and Quinn will sure leave you wanting more! Give these guys a chance; I think you’ll be hooked like I am.

Spirit Animal

After a very fast change over it was time for Spirit Animal. Spirit Animal hails from Brooklyn and that New York attitude comes out in their music and in rock and roll that’s a good thing, no that’s a great thing! Touring in support on their latest release ‘Born Yesterday’ Steve, Ronen, Paul and Cal gave a 110% effort on stage at Capone’s! Playing mostly tracks from ‘Born Yesterday’ that included “YEAH!”, “Painkiller” and “BST FRNDS.” I might add that “BST FRNDS” has one of the best intro bass solos i’ve heard in recent years, bassist Paul adds an immediate flood of groove to the song that doesn’t end when the rest of the instruments kick in. Spirit Animal had the Johnson City crowd rockin and rollin to the funky rock sounds they were laying down! I missed their set earlier this year at Rock On The Range, glad I final got to experience them live and in person, and these intimate clubs shows are always the best.

Red Sun Rising

The road crew and the staff at Capone’s made short work of the changeover… now it was time for Red Sun Rising! I was lucky enough to have seen and photographed Red Sun Rising at Rock on the Range earlier this year, and I was more than looking forward to seeing them again. They did not disappoint! Starting the night off with “Veins” from this year’s release ‘Thread’ then into “Amnesia” and “Emotionless” from 2015’s ‘Polyester Zeal.’ Red Sun Rising let the Sunday night crowd that they meant business! For the next hour or so they took care of that business with mics, guitars, bass, drums and a ton of movement on stage! Right in the middle of this outstanding set of music they performed a phenomenal cover of Alanis Morissette’s “Uninvited”. They ended the 10 song set with “Evil Like you” before coming back out for a 2 song encore which included “Stealing Life” and “Deathwish”.

That brought to an end a great night of music in one of my favorite venues. If you get a chance to see any of these bands together or separately take that chance I don’t think you will be disappointed with any of them!
Go see a show at Capone’s and you’ll see why it is one of my favorite venues. If nothing else though go see a show, support live music wherever you are!
