Remember Steve Thompson? Yeah, the guy who handled mixing duties on METALLICA‘s ‘…And Justice For All?‘ and also the one, who often takes a beating when it comes to the mixing bass on that very record. We recently had the opportunity to talk to this record producer about “Appetite For Destruction“, “…And Justice For All?“, “Ugly“, “Bring the Noize” and Korn‘s “Follow The Leader.”
Steve Thompson is an American producer who is a very familiar face when it comes to handling duties or just in studio exercises. He boasts about having worked with bands of excellent repertoire, such as that of METALLICA, GUNS N’ ROSES, ANTHRAX, LIFE OF AGONY, KORN and many others through the years. He is also a seven times Grammy winner and has worked on a lot of platinum, diamond and gold records.
I recently had the great pleasure of interviewing Justin Graves, drummer for the band Vexes; who are about to release their full-length debut album, ‘Ancient Geometry’ tomorrow, February 23, 2018. During our conversation, Justin shared some great insights into the band’s writing and recording process with me, as well as what’s to come for Vexes in the future, and more.
Vexes originally formed in 2016 from the ashes of A Life Once Lost, Vessl, Fury of Five, and Downstage. Lineup consists of Charlie Berezansky (vocals/guitar/keyboard), Justin Graves (drums), John Klagholz (guitar/keyboard), and Bobby Carpenter (bass). Their sound is modern but proudly pays homage to their 90’s influences including Deftones, Cave In, Thrice, and Helmet. For those of us who grew up in the era from where much of this music draws its inspiration, listening to this album will bring a warm sense of nostalgia as it transports you back into high school with your baggy jeans and Puma Suedes. For newcomers, expect a moody and oftentimes melancholic hard rock/metal experience with powerfully melodic choruses and crooning vocals. Continue reading

Asbury Park, NJ natives, Toothgrinder, have been making waves in the metal scene for a while now, sharing the stage with huge names including Meshuggah, Killswitch Engage, Between The Buried and Me, Polyphia, and The Contortionist. The band consists of Justin Matthews (vocals), Jason Gross (guitar), Matt Arsendorf (bass/backing vocals), Willis Weller (drums) and Johnuel Hasney (guitar/backing vocals). What started in the early 80s in the UK scene with genre flag bearers Napalm Death, grindcore has really evolved and sustained a long period of time. An offshoot of hardcore punk, grindcore continues to be the main subject and genre for many bands even to this day. With it’s intense paced riffing, coarse and vexed vocals and relentless drumming, Finnish grindcore stalwarts ROTTEN SOUND are coming up with a brand new EP. Following 2016’s full length, ‘Abuse To Suffer‘, the EP whose title, ‘Suffer To Abuse‘ is a witty take on their preceding studio album. The new mini LP will be released worldwide on May 18th in North America (April 13th in Europe). America’s real bad ass Zak Wylde’s band BLACK LABEL SOCIETY has unveiled it’s curtain on their all new music video, “A Love Unreal“, off their latest album, ‘Grimmest Hits‘, which came out on January 19, 2018 via Entertainment One Music. The video was directed by long-time collaborating director Justin Reich. The video shows a hilarious account of a grim reaper in his daily shenanigans, from getting arrested to, doing the laundry, playing Billiards etc. Not something you see daily eh?
