Picking the Right Kind of Music for Your Event

Choosing the right music for your event is a big responsibility and can enhance the overall success of the function. Similarly, choosing the wrong type of music or failing to properly prepare can be a disaster. In this article we’ll share a few tips to consider as you start looking for the perfect musical performance for your next event.

Event

First things first, what kind of an event are you planning? Many times, the event itself will help predetermine the kind of music that should be included. At the very least, it will give you a rough idea of the sound and genres to be considered.

Is this a big corporate event or a small family gathering? Is it a highly publicized production for the general public or a smaller private affair by invitation only? These are all questions to be considered.

Another thing to consider is whether the music will be a primary focus or if it’s going to be in the background. For example, if you were organizing a community festival then you’ll probably want an upbeat band that will draw people’s attention and keep them entertained so that they are interested to stay longer. However, if you are planning to host an art show at a local gallery, then you probably don’t want a musical selection that’s going to steal attention from the featured art exhibit. If that’s the case, then choosing a violinist for hire might help create the right vibe for your art showing.

Audience

Think about the audience who will likely be in attendance. Will it be a younger crowd or an older crowd? Will they be more open minded and willing to experience something new or do you think they’ll be a bit more conservative with their musical interests? Are they looking to have fun and will they engage with the musical act or not?

Venue

What is the venue like? Does the venue typically have music performances or is this something new? This will also help determine if you need to rent sound equipment as well, unless the band has their own.

Speak with the venue in advance to see if they have any prerequisites when it comes to bringing in music performers. The venue might have specific requirements that need to be met.

Money

When you’re searching for the right musical act to book for your event, you’ll certainly need to consider your expenses. Whether you’re looking to book a full band, a solo musician, or a DJ, you’ll need to remember that these people are professional musicians and will charge accordingly. As noted above, if you need to also rent sound equipment then this will be an added expense to consider.

Schedule Early

Finally, remember to book your musical act early. If you’re booking professionals then it’s important to remember that performing music is their job. That means they likely book gigs weeks or event months in advance. Some bigger acts might even book a full year in advance, especially if they perform outside of their local area. Get in contact with the musician early to ensure they are available. Take the necessary steps to make it official, whether that means signing a contract or placing a down payment, so that they are committed to your event and won’t get booked elsewhere.
