*This is part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured State*
This month’s State is Texas!
Texas has always had a great music scene. It’s not surprising considering it’s size and the large number of huge cities within the states borders. Everyone has a favorite Texas band, so I figure it’s time to let you in on mine. I know what you are thinking and no it’s not Pantera, D.R.I., The Sword, or ZZ Top. My favorite Texans is none other than Pissing Razors. The El Paso band has always been heavy as hell and has been a mainstay in my listening rotation for years.
They released their debut album ‘Psycho Punko Metal Groove’ in 1996 independently. It was an incredible start to what would come. The follow up was the self titled album in 1998 on Noise Records. The aggression in their music was something we couldn’t get enough of. They were already bring compared to Pantera or the best thing since Pantera. The comparisons only came more often after the band covered “Domination” for a Pantera tribute album. The band released 2 more albums on Noise Records. 1999’s Cast Down The Plague and 2000’s Fields of Disbelief. Each album was just as good as the next. I was very fortunate to be able to catch them in Nashville, Tennessee in 2004 on the Evolution Tour. It was a tiny little club and a local band was opening for them called 12 Volt Negative Earth. The tiny little place was packed. Pissing Razors has always had a good following and fan base, but they also have been sort of an underground band. To my surprise after the local band played almost everyone in the whole place left. When Pissing Razors took the stage there was about 5 people there. Most bands would have been mad, these guys took the stage like their was 1000 people there and killed it. You could feel the bass drum with every kick by Eddy. After the show we spoke briefly and they appreciated us being there. It just shows that some of the most ass kicking bands around are also some of the nicest people you will meet.
I was immensely happy in the past year to hear that the band was reforming. The band has been playing some shows around the Texas area but not venturing too far from home. I can’t wait until we are able to get a new record from these guys as I’m sure they have some rage bottled up to unleash upon us. If you haven’t heard these guys you are truly missing out. A few months ago we interviewed guitarist Mat Lynch, after familiarizing yourself with the band make sure to give it a read here. Listen to these guys once and you will be addicted to their aggressive brutal sound. They are also gearing up for a tour, so be on the lookout if they grace your town…
