Review: TOMBS – ‘Monarchy Of Shadows’ [Tracks Streaming]

New York experimental black metal band Tombs grabbed my attention two years ago when I got their sophomore album ‘Path Of Totality’ in a Relapse Records blind bag deal. Tombs formed in 2007 with founding member and frontman Mike Hill. My expectations are high for ‘Monarchy Of Shadows’ as it follows their great 2017 record ‘The Grand Annihilation.’ On top of their last record they have the weight of ‘Path Of Totality’ on their shoulders, which won Decibel Magazine’s 2011 Album of the Year award. Consisting of Mike Hill, Justin Spaeth, Drew Murphy, and Matt Medieiros, Tombs rip their way into a new decade with some of their best songs in their entire discography on this EP ‘Monarchy Of Shadows’ which releases on February 28, 2020 via Seasons Of The Mist. While every track on ‘The Grand Annihilation’ stands separate from those around it, it is still a cohesive collection, and at no point do the stylistic twists and turns undermine its coherence. The blasting, scathing yet melodic black metal savagery of opener “Black Sun Horizon” and “Way Of The Storm” are very much built to destroy, while wielding a poignancy that is undeniable – both of which stand in strong contrast to the uncomfortable post-punk squall of “Underneath” that showcases front-man Mike Hill’s Nick Cave/Ian Curtis-esque singing voice, while the likes of the throbbing “Saturnalian” and unnerving tribal thunder of “Walk With Me In Nightmares” stand in categories all of their own.

Review: TOMBS – ‘The Grand Annihilation’ [Official Videos]

When you mention the word metal in Brooklyn it will be likely that you will stumble upon the band Tombs. They are signed to the one and only Metal Blade Records and currently consist of 3 members. Tombs has known a lot of musicians will all different styles yet they have always stayed the great metal band with black metal like vocals. Guitarist Evan Void and drummer Charlie Schmid have both joined the band in 2014, vocalist Mike Hill on the other hand has stayed with the band since the beginning (2007). Tomorrow on the 16th of June they will release their 4th album ‘The Grand Annihilation’ which will be available for purchase worldwide. The EP ‘Winter Hours’ has created their pathway into the local Brooklyn scene where the albums ‘Fear Is The Weapon’, ‘Path Of Totality’ and ‘Savage Gold’ from 2014. Eventhough they have changed their line-up multiple times all these albums sound like the Tombs we all adore, EP ‘All Empires Fall‘ from 2016 has pointed the band in the right direction to create more awesome music. ‘The Grand Annihilation’ is all we ever wanted and more!
