Operation: Mindcrime – ‘The New Reality’ (Review)

If metal could be tied down to a number of iconic soundbites or phrases, “Operation: Mindcrime” would most certainly be high on the list after the seminal Queensryche rock-opera of the same title. Recently such a phrase has found yet again its prevalence in the corridors of rock with the emergence of ex-Queensryche vocalist Geoff Tate and his concept project Operation: Mindcrime, whose third studio album ‘The New Reality’ is set to hit the market on December 1, 2017. State Of The Art: BINARY CODE! [Official Album Stream]

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state*
This month’s state is New Jersey!

Binary Code is a progressive metalband from, how suprising, New Jersey. They have been making stellar music since 2010 starting with ‘Priest’ which is, to me, one of the better progressive records I have heard in a while. But don’t worry, the flame hasn’t died yet. Last year, May 24, they restarted the engine by firing up the full album ‘Moonsblood’. So without further ado, let’s dig right into this masterpiece of a band!

Album Review: OBLIVION “The Path Towards…’ [Partial Album Stream + Video Stream]

It’s been over 3 years since the release of Oblivions critically acclaimed debut ‘Called To Rise’, and now their highly anticipated follow-up release is ready to be unleashed. ‘The Path Towards’ is the next exciting chapter for Oblivion in their odyssey of musical mastery, with internationally acclaimed composer (and Antagony founder) Dr. Nick Vasallo at the helm. Boasting not only an impeccable line-up itself*, ‘The Path Towards’ also features an all-star line-up of guest artists that include Karl Sanders (Nile, guest songwriter), Eddie Hermida (Suicide Silence/All Shall Perish, guest vocals), Enrico H. Di Lorenzo (Hideous Divinity, guest vocals), and Carlos Saldana (Connoisseur, guest vocals). This album also marks the return of Ben Orum (All Shall Perish and Antagony founder) and Nick Vasallo collaborating on music since Antagony’s debut album in 2001. ‘The Path Towards…’ is out November 17th via Unique Leader Records and is available to order here.

A follow-up is always a hard feat for many an artist, but with 2013’s debut having been crowned “the must-own album of 2013” by Metal Injection, and comments such as “the band’s eleven song display of nothing more than pure aggression with more musical depth than many bands can find in their entire discography” from Sputnik Music; Oblivion had already set the bar extremely high and left fans and media outlets alike with a burning desire for their sophomore release. Vasallos talents as an accomplished composer certainly bring a whole new dimension to the music, with this record giving off an overwhelming experience of boundary crossing metal at its finest. This release is arguably the most exciting death metal release of the year, giving off a lasting impression that we are listening to veterans in the death metal scene (despite in real terms only being early on in their career.) RIGHT TO THE VOID Release Official Video “Lines” From Long Awaited ‘Lūnātĭo’ EP [Video Stream]

French progressive death metal combo Right To The Void have just released the official video “Lines” taken from their forthcoming EP ‘Lūnātĭo’. The long awaited release will be the first of an EP trilogy and marks a new and exciting direction for the band. ‘Lūnātĭo’ is out November 17th via international label Wormholedeath Records and is available to preorder on itunes here.

In 2010 Right To The Void released their first EP ‘It Has To Be Done’ recorded by Rakan Musics, and have since played extensively in France; sharing the stage with grind legends Napalm Death as well as Immolation, As They Burn and E-force and many more. In 2012 they signed with Wormholedeath, on which they released their debut album ‘Kingdom Of Vanity’ in 2013. The album was recorded at MathLab Recording Studios, Italy with the producer Jonathan Mazzeo (The Way Of Purity, Mechanical God Creation) and was mixed/mastered by Christian Donaldson (The Agonist, Beneath The Massacre, Cryptopsy et al) in Canada. The following year saw the release of their highly anticipated sophomore album ‘Light Of The Fallen Gods’ which received rave reviews. Both records can be ordered here with both available to stream on Spotify. Since then the band have been touring all over Europe and have been working on material for the upcoming EP which they teased with a 56 second video on July 3rd this year. “Lines” is the first single to be taken from the ‘Lūnātĭo’ EP. Review: SCOUR – ‘Red’ EP. Supergroup Ft Philip Anselmo, Adam Jarvis… [Partial Album Stream]

“[T]he Scour thing was something that just popped up, and it’s something that I think I can kill, something I can lay it out…it’s predominantly, in my ear, modern-ish black metal sounding, thrash black metal type stuff. I’m going to put my own spin on it. I don’t have to sound like your boy from Gorgoroth (laughter) to get my point across, man. There’s other ways of singing over that style of music, and I shall employ many styles” – Philip H. Anselmo talking to hellbound.ca

Just kill it? – too tame! The US extreme metal supergroup Scour, the brainchild of Philip H. Anselmo (Pantera, Down), John Jarvis (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed), Derek Engemann (Cattle Decapitation), Chase Fraser (Animosity, Decrepit Birth), and Adam Jarvis (Pig Destroyer, Misery Index) have absolutely annihilated it once again with their ferocious new ‘Red’ EP out this Friday 3rd Nov via Anselmo’s own Housecore records label (physicals including CD, LP and merchandise orders here, and digital available here). The ‘Red’ EP offers a punishing 16-minute mix of pure modern black metal with pulsating grind and thrash which will leave you ‘seeing red’ with an insatiable bloodthirsty appetite for more – not that that’s a bad thing, existing fans of Scour are waiting heavily in anticipation for a full-length and if this EP is anything to go by, it will be an absolutely formidable aural battery full, pioneering the new chapter in US Black metal!

The record well exceeds expectations that were already set high after 2016’s debut ‘Grey’ EP, which reached an unprecedented #4 on the iTunes top 100 heavy metal albums just 2 days after release. The ‘Grey’ also saw release via Anselmo’s own Housecore label, just before their crushing performance at Hellfest Open Air festival featuring the Pantera classic “Strength Beyond Strength”. Review: VOIDS – ‘No Character : No Crown’ [Official Videos]

Voids hasn’t been in the game for a long time yet their sound suggests otherwise, beginning with the 2015 EP ‘As Above, So Below’ they already proved that they understand the deep roots of metalcore and with the 2017 release of ‘No Character : No Crown’ they have shown us that they only have improved ever since. Their new album offers a huge quality difference as well as a mature sounding character. With that being said, let’s get right into the review!
