What do you get when you take a primarily one-man musical project from Columbus, Ohio and mix it with a two-man musical project from Malaysia? You get six songs of pure badassery from the freshly issued “Taurean” split EP from the Buckeye State’s THAL (The Heathens Are Loose) and the weed worshiping Hashishian of course! Only THAL‘s Vince Green (John Walker) is joined by his wytCHord bandmate, Kevin Hartnell, for some help with the drums and guitars on this new material. Meanwhile, Hashishian is working within its own two man configuration for their contribution here as well so let’s jump into it, shall we? Continue reading →
Connecticut-based label imprint Salt Of The Earth Records have announced that they have signed the Cali desert psychedelia trio Atala for the band’s next studio recording. There has been no release date yet publicized but that Billy Anderson-produced album, “Labyrinth Of Ashmedai“, will see release this spring prior to the band heading to Europe for their first time. Expectations are high concerning the new studio effort, which is the follow up to 2016’s critically acclaimed Shaman’s Path Of The Serpent (my review here), with Atala‘s guitarist/vocalist Kyle Stratton saying: “I am very excited that Atala has signed on with Salt of the Earth Records. It’s great to be part of the family. Now we are labelmates with Scissorfight, Buzzard Canyon, When The Deadbolt Breaks, Ol’ Time Moonshine, and my favorites, Cortez. How cool is that?! This is really Some great company to be keeping, And we count ourselves very lucky to be part of this.”
Stratton, who is also a tattoo artist by trade alongside his musical endeavors, created the artwork for the new album also and it is shared below. Atala is rounded out by drummer Jeff Tedtaotao and bassist John Chavarria and I am extremely excited and looking forward to the band’s “Labyrinth Of Ashmedai” in the months ahead.
Teaneck, N.J.’s Super Snake released their contribution to all things amore-related yesterday, Valentine’s Day, with their new album “Leap Of Love“. In fact, they are streaming it in its entirety today and I must say, it is a rather interesting sounding release to say the least. Produced by Kevin Antreassianfrom the Dillinger Escape Plan, Leap Of Love is Super Snake’sanxiously awaited follow up to their earlier EP releases, Summer Girls & Rider. The album itself is headfirst dive into trippy Psyche-Pop and ofttimes hazy, atmospheric Doom and here’s your opportunity to experience it in the embed below. Enjoy!
RIYL: Queens Of The Stone Age, Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth
The Philadelphia-based heavy psyche rock band formed from the ashes of A Life Once Lost, Ecstatic Vision, have announced their new release “Raw Rock Fury” will be coming soon. The 4-song follow up to their “Sonic Praise” debut will be issued through Relapse Records in CD/LP and Digital formats on April 7th. They are sharing the new track “You Got It (Or You Don’t)” today and commented on the new album and the track saying:
“With Raw Rock Fury, we set out to make an album that would remind listeners of what an unpolished, dangerous rock recording should sound like. This is the opening composition entitled “You Got It (Or You Don’t)”. Prepare for a searing mash-up of the driving rhythms of Sly & The Family Stone mixed with the sounds of Hawkwind playing Funhouse-era Troglodyte Rock.”
I remember myself and the stoner rock community at large all going haywire over the 2015 self-titled EP from the UK’s 1968 as it was a superbly stellar release without doubt. That’s why I was super stoked recently to learn that the band was back and planning to release the “Havana Fortuna” EP via Black Bow Records on Feb. 10th. I got on the hotline and procured a digital promotional copy and Jesus Christ, the lads are definitely back and in a big damned way for sure! I learned there had been a line up change within the band too as earlier members, vocalist Jimi Ray, guitarist Sam Orr, and bassist Tom Richards are still here but drummer Tom Drury had been replaced by former Sons Of Andal drummer Dan Amati. In fact, this EP is the last recorded work of Drury’s with 1968. And what work it is too as the earlier EP was a bit more in the style of Desert/Stoner Rock and while those elements are still here, there’s also been a clear trek into Psyche-tinged Hard/Classic Rock on these 4 songs.
One of the heaviest occult psyche-doom bands active at this time is Dead Witches, the band formed by former Electric Wizard/With The Dead drummer Mark Greening and Psychedelic Witchcraft songstress Virginia Monti. I have continually shared news items and other coverage of the project including my own recent interview with the duo (here). Dead Witches is rounded out by bassist Carl Geary and the recently passed guitarist Greg Elk and they will be releasing their debut album, “Ouija“, via Heavy Psych Sounds on February 10th (I have an upcoming review of said release coming to Metal Nexus soon by the way). In preparation for the imminent offering, Dead Witches have just released their new NSFW (Not Safe For Work) official video for the track “Drawing Down The Moon” and we invite you to check it out below.
Italian stoner rockers Rhino are preparing to release their new album “The Law Of Purity” via Argonauta Records on February 13th and we have all kinds of news related to the offering. First, Metal Nexus is excited to announce that we will host an exclusive stream of the full album beginning on February 8th! Second, Rhino have just debuted their Official Video for the track “Grey” from the album, which is streaming below along with the details of “The Law Of Purity” including artwork and tracklist.
Argonauta Records act Ephedra are streaming their new album “Can’-Ka No Rey” in its entirety today before its official release on January 30th. It will be available then on CD and digital formats while the tracklist is shared here also. Ephedra‘s music is powerfully dense Desert Rock with ample amounts of psychedelia and a progressive edge to it all so make sure to check out the new record streaming below.
Berlin’s Pyrior were unknowns to me when I first obtained their latest release, the 7-song “Portal” which was issued back at the first of December and has turned out to be quite a nice surprise. Evidently the trio of guitarist Max Appeal, bassist Toa Ster, and drummer Dan Low (hmm, interesting monikers, huh?) have been around since 2008 and have a few releases under their belts already. That time together is unquestionably noticeable upon listening to this offering as the music, which is instrumental and highly experimental, covers a vast expanse of musical territories. It is all tightly knit and cohesively flowing while possessing a kind of free-form jamming nature to it as well. Altogether trippy, things are constantly emitting a strong psyche/space rock vibe but has no problem switching gears on a dime and heading into areas of blues and desert rock. Continue reading →
Italy’s intense, slow simmering and retro-fueled power trio Doctor Cyclops have announced they will be releasing their new album, “Local Dogs“, via Heavy Psych Sounds on March 31st. The new record is rumored to be “their heaviest and most accomplished project to date” which sounds highly promising knowing what I do about earlier material from the guys. The presence of a guest appearance from guitarist Bill Steer (Carcass, Firebird, Gentleman’s Pistol) playing lead guitar on two tracks ensures this to be a phenomenal album for certain. “Local Dogs” will be issued on LTD clear blue vinyl, black vinyl, CD and digital. Its’ compelling artwork was designed by Rise Above (Marcello Crescenzi).
