*Every Tuesday from now until Chicago Open Air gets here we will be releasing an article about a band playing the festival to get you familiar with them.*
Today’s artist is Alien Weaponry.
On Sunday, May 19th, the young New Zealand thrashtastic trio in Alien Weaponry brings their immense sound to SeatGeek Stadium for Chicago Open Air. Brothers Henry and Lewis de Jong formed the band back in 2010 before they were even teenagers. The third member is Ethan Trembath. The trio bases a lot of their lyrics off of their Māori ancestry, which all three of them have. Most of their songs are also performed in the native language, te reo Māori. The band really took off last year and saw international success with the release of their debut album, ‘Tū’ via Napalm Records.
Candlemass are one of the most important names in Doom Metal. Along with Saint Vitus, Trouble, and The Obsessed they all helped create a form of music that was heavily influenced by the forefathers of Doom and Gloom: Black Sabbath! From their 1986 debut classic ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’ to the 2018 ep ‘The House of Doom’ Candlemass have been one of the hardest working and most consistent bands in the Metal scene. However, with the upcoming release of ‘The Door to Doom’ (available February 22nd via Napalm Records) the band have managed to top past glories and have (arguably) released the best album of their long career! With the excitement of the new releases for 2019, let’s get you hyped some more. The balls to the wall thrash metal band Dust Bolt has released a new lyric video for the debut of their song “Bloody Rain” from their upcoming album ‘Trapped in Chaos,’ arriving January 18th, 2019 on Napalm Records. Desert rock legend John Garcia is back with and he brought some sand-covered riffs for your ears. Garcia is a founding member and former vocalist of the now disbanded Kyuss. Since their split Garcia has not stopped working on project after project, often bringing on old bandmates like Scott Reeder and Brant Bjork. After forming Slo Burn, Unida, and Vista Chino Garcia released two solo albums. Some of these included original material or different takes on old Kyuss tunes. Since his last recording, The Coyote Who Spoke in Tongues, John Garcia and the band have found a new energy that is palpable from the first note.
John Garcia And The Band Of Gold begins with the introductory track, “Space Vato”. As tiring as introduction tracks have become, this ramped up an energy that prepared you for the coming tide of the album. Garcia’s identifiable and unique voice is as strong as ever. With the small bite-sized tracks the album does not exhaust or lose momentum; One track moves on to the next without one staying for too long. Tracks like “Chicken Delight” and “Popcorn (Hit Me When You Can)” are groovy tracks rooted in old acid rock with modern aggression and style to them. “Lilliana” is riff powered desert rock, something that can only be born from sand. My favorite track on the record “Apache Junction” is pure Sabbath-worship that channels the energy of a song like “Hand of Doom”. After spending a day in the desert, you sit and stare at the stars with “Softer Side”. This ends the album on a soft and euphoric note.
John Garcia And the Band Of Gold is out via Napalm Records January 4 with a European tour happening shortly after its release (dates below). To keep up with John Garcia and his band, follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Following the release of 2016’s ‘King of Everything’, and the reissue of their groundbreaking second album ‘Cloud Factory’ on Napalm Records, fans have chomping at the bit for new music from Jinjer. Now it is finally time for some heavy new tunes and the band is happy to oblige with the release of a brand new 5-track EP entitled ‘Micro’ due out January 11th, 2019! Continue reading
After posting live videos of tracks from ‘King Of Everything’ and ‘Cloud Factory’ people were instantly hooked and so began the shaping of their way into the metal scene. But even before that they were one of the few female leading bands that got a lot of praise for their unique and brutal sound. Just everything is on point with these guys and ”Ape” doesn’t say otherwise!
*This is part of our “Louder Than Life 2018 Spotlight” series where we focus on some of the up-and-coming bands that fans can see at this year’s Louder Than Life Festival on Sept. 28th-30th. This week, we’re checking out Monster Magnet.*
1989 marks the year of birth of New Jersey’s spacerock legends Monster Magnet. Though this band isn’t one of the headliners of this years festival they have put in their time and are veterans of the rock and metal world. They have likely put in more hours on stage than most of the other early acts combined. The bands first demos titled ‘Forget About Life, I’m High on Dope’ and ‘I’m Stoned, What Ya Gonna Do About It?’ should pretty much tell you everything you need to know about the band, but there is much more you should know. The band released their official debut album ‘Spine Of God’ on Caroline Records in 1991 which became a full on genre classic literally in an instant. If you were ever looking for some stoner space rock look no further than the originators; Monster Magnet. Frontman Dave Wyndorf has expertly piloted the band through an asteroid belt of lineup changes and health scares, substance abuse and public opinion, emerging as something of a stoner rock elder statesman. The drug hazed heavy sound of the releases helped in cementing Monster Magnet‘s reputation of being the only legit descendants of the likes of psychedelic and stoner rock Godfathers Hawkwind, Black Sabbath, and their electrifying punk siblings in MC5.
Who is ready for the most awesome and badass band hailing from German grounds? Powerwolf is back to release another beauty and this time it is called ‘The Sacrament Of Sin’ and I can assure you that it is as cool as it sounds. It contains all the best aspects Powerwolf has to offer and more. It is truly amazing and I can’t wait to share it with you guys. Get in!
‘For the Love of Metal’ is the highly anticipated solo album from the legendary, Dee Snider. Releasing on July 27, 2018 on Napalm Records, This is his latest record after 2016’s ‘We Are the Ones’. Snider is most well known for being the vocalist for the iconic metal band, Twisted Sister and host and radio personality of the very popular show, The House of Hair. This new album is what we needed; gut busting, new music from one of the great voices in metal. The direction of the album is very forward and goes back to the classic sounds of 80’s metal. This whole album is filled with killer riffs and hard hitting deafening percussion. I was so excited to hear that he was coming out with some new material. My mind was overwhelmed when I first clicked play and it remained that way throughout the whole album. Continue reading
