Oldschool Sunday: LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT

Facebooktwittermail

LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT

Liquid Tension Experiment was (and still may be) a progressive rock project from the drumming dynamo that is Mike Portnoy during his time while still in Dream Theater. It was 1997 when Portnoy got the itch to play some music outside of his day job in DT so he formed the earliest incarnation of LTE with Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and guitarist John Petrucci along with the iconic bass/Chapman Stick player Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel). Petrucci’s initial involvement was intended to be temporary as Portnoy was trying to land other guitarists ranging from ‘Dimebag’ Darrel (Pantera) to Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and Steve Morse (Dixie Dreggs, Deep Purple). Another intriguing fact is that Jordan Rudess was not a member of Dream Theater at this time, instead having opted to join Dixie Dreggs after having declined an offer to join the DT group in 1994. The chemistry in Liquid Tension Experiment was clearly a cohesive, inspiring formula and the band recorded then released their self-titled Liquid Tension Experiment album for Magna Carta Records in 1998. They also began playing a handful of live shows around that time too including ones in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and London.

TAR HAG ‘Elder Cloak’ Review & Stream

Facebooktwittermail

Greenville, South Carolina offers up another collective of its favorite sons for a Metal Nexus review with the burdening, sludgened doom of Tar Hag. Steeped within a quagmire of blackened sludge and semi Lo-Fi doom, vocalist Beeg, guitarist/vox Dano, guitarist Colin and drummer Kyle recently issued their punishing 6-song slab of lethal languishing via Doomsayer Records. By that I mean the volatile threat contained in their music here will ably linger and prolong its effects long after the first round of pummeling has been delivered. Behemoth-like, monstrous riffs churn this grotesque goliath along like some assuredly agonizing deformity of sonic excess. While they do, the resonating rhythmic rumbles and bludgeoning drums crunch and crunch away as the razor bladed, throat-wounded vocals spew their blood-soaked caustic cadence. Intentionally harsh and absent of any possibility of hope, the songs “More Weight“, title track “Elder Cloak” and “Coven Circle” deliver ominous vibes amid their intermittent grooves. The latter delivers an occasional more upbeat tempo at times, unfurling opiate-like reasons to repeatedly inject these sounds into your skull.

JORN LANDE

The legendary and talented singer Jorn Lande has premiered an Official Video for his amazing cover of DIO’s “Rainbow In The Dark“, a track from his latest release of covers, “Heavy Rock Radio“. The album, which was released last year through Frontiers Records, contains an amazing array of well-chosen songs that showcase Jorn’s amazing vocal talents. He pretty much makes the songs his own with his super-powerful renditions of such classics as The Eagles “Hotel California“, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill“, John Farnham’s “You’re The Voice“, Queen’s “Killer Queen“, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and Foreigner’s “Rev On The Red Line“.

HOLLOW LEG ‘Murder’ EP Review & Song Share

Facebooktwittermail

I have extolled the virtues of Florida’s Hollow Leg since I first learned of them back during the release of 2010’s Instinct and then on into subsequent outings Abysmal (2013) and Crown (2016). Seeing them decimate the stage at last year’s Maryland Doom Fest was a high point of the year for me as well and now we arrive at the present. Hollow Leg will issue a 2-song EP titled “Murder” through Argonauta Records on March 3rd and it will mark a personnel change within the unit. Recently, drummer and founding member Tim Creter exited the Jacksonville-based sonic juggernauts and his replacement, John Stewart (Caribou King), manned the kit for this new recording. The results here are proof positive that Stewart has settled right into the band alongside vocalist Scott Angelacos, guitarist/vocalist Brent Lynch and bassist Tom Crowther.

WITHERFALL ‘Nocturnes And Requiems’ Review & Album Stream

Facebooktwittermail

It was back in December 2016 when I first learned of the then-newly surfacing project named Witherfall and was promptly amazed by the song I heard at the time, “End Of Time“. It was a bittersweet discovery to be honest as the music was exceptionally fantastic but I was quickly made aware that it was some of the last recorded work from drummer Adam Sagan (R.I.P.) who had recently passed. Alongside Adam in the band was a stellar pair of amazing artists, guitarist Jake Dreyer (Iced Earth, White Wizzard, Kobra And The Lotus) and vocalist Joseph Michael (White Wizzard). Bassist Anthony Crawford completed the roster and the foursome collectively created their incredible debut album “Nocturnes And Requiems“, which was produced Michael and Dreyer. It was mixed and mastered by the renowned Chris ‘Zeuss’ Harris, one of the most highly sought after studio wizards in today’s music community. What this team has created here is one far-reaching musical journey into a wide expanse of modern Progressive Metal and I will adamantly say that this record is definitely placing now as one of my first Best Of 2017 releases along with the upcoming Arduini/Balich debut, “Dawn Of Ages“.
