Review: MoE ‘Examination Of The Eye Of A Horse’ [Stream]

MoE are a band that truly sets themselves apart from anyone else in the music world. Hailing from Norway MoE mixes their minimalist compositions with an alternative experimental approach. Their sound often comes off as noisy punk influenced rock but they do not want it to be confused with metal. Not wanting their music to be confused with metal displays the confidence they have in their unique sound. The band formed in 2008 and has 4 releases thus far. MoE recently released their album ‘Examination Of The Eye Of A Horse’ on October 14th via Conrad Sound. The album was co-produced by co-produced by Jorgen Traeen. MoE creates a sound that will not conform to a genre.

‘Examination Of The Eye Of A Horse’ kicks things off with a massive dose of distortion on the opening track “Realm of Refuge”. Vocalist Moe has this hauntingly eerie yet soothing voice. The song has a wild and experimental feel. “Little have you suffered, cut my head, shut my mouth” is just a small token of the lyrics that make up this song. Moe’s singing style or haunting whisper at times make the lyrics even that much more meaningful. Emotion spills from her and it’s felt in the uniqueness of her voice. Cymbal crashes and guitar riffs are not absent from the song, they equally hold their weight in comparison to the vocals. In the song “Paris” the band’s sound takes a new direction. Everything is fast paced at the beginning with an almost grindcore like sound. The track changes it’s stride various times. My favorite track on the album is “Doll’s Eyes”. The guitar riffs in this song really stand out. Along with the drums and vocals the song really has a violent tone. An onward charge through the song ends like most violence does. An abrupt stop. The way the band is able to play at such a fast pace and then end in such a manner deserves much applause. ‘Examination Of The Eye Of A Horse’ is an album that can’t be labeled, it fits no genre. MoE’s experimentation with music has birthed a beast all it’s own.
