Louder Than Life Spotlight: BLEEKER

*Every Tuesday and Thursday from now until Louder Than Life gets here we will be releasing an article about a band playing the festival to get you familiar with them.*

Today’s artist is Bleeker.

On Sunday, October 1st, Bleeker is coming to Louder Than Life all the way from Ontario, Canada. The band formed in 2003 but did not change their name to Bleeker until 2016. Taylor and Cole Perkins formed the band as brothers and continue to climb their way up the ladder of the rock scene. They were all young teenagers when they started so they are still a fairly young band despite being seasoned artists. They were originally called Bleeker Ridge but changed their name to just Bleeker when Dustin and Dan Steinke left the band in 2016. Their sound in their early days was strong enough to get them signed to Roadrunner Records in 2010. They released ‘Small Town Dead’ and later toured with acts like Papa Roach, Buckcherry, and Airbourne. They released one more album under Bleeker Ridge independently in 2013 before the name change. The new album marked the band’s rise back to the top for a second time. Continue reading

This month’s state is Illinois!

Ey yo people! Welcome back to the weekly edition of our State Of The Art series, where every Monday we get a bit generous and pull the curtains down and shed some limelight to the lesser known and underground bands who already are wrecking shit up at your local town or city, or even across oceans apart. Last month I highlighted the fast and punishing thrash metal band called WARHEAD from Phoenix, Arizona, which you can check it out HERE. Today I am here to rejuvenate your boring Monday with another kick ass band that has been stirring some major shit up since their self-titled, debut album came out in 2002. And especially, this year with their new highly acclaimed 2017 record, ‘Cloak Of Skies‘. This week’s band is Industrial/Doom-death metal outfit from the capital city Chicago, Illinois, DRUG HONKEY. You thought I’d be doing a hat-trick on thrash bands? Didn’t you? Well, this band really turned my head and got my attention real good, for all the new and genre breaking antics they’re up to.

Vincent Price of BODY COUNT “We Don’t Have To Play Clubs” [Video]

Body Count is an Los Angeles based metal band formed in 1990. The group is fronted by Ice-T, who co-founded the group with lead guitarist Ernie C . Ice-T first made his stamp on the music industry as a rapper and moved on to metal when he formed Body Count. The band released its self-titled debut album in 1992. The band encountered controversy over their track “Cop Killer”, which was thought to glamorize killing police officers. Because of this song Body Count was banned from playing anywhere in L.A. The band was already star studded but this news made them even more popular. Ernie C the man responsible for writing the bands music had an integral part of kick starting the careers of both Stone Temple Pilots and Rage Against The Machine as he helped produce their demos. Three out of the band’s original six members are deceased: D-Roc died from lymphoma, Beatmaster V from leukemia and Mooseman in a drive-by shooting. The band released 3 more albums before going on hiatus. ‘Born Dead’ (1994), ‘Violent Demise: The Last Days’ (1997), and then 9 years later released ‘Murder 4 Hire’ in 2006. In 2012 the band advised they were working on a new album and were quickly signed to Sumerian Records. The band released the album ‘Manslaughter’ in 2014 and also unveiled the single and video for ‘Institutionalized’. The single cemented Body Count’s rightful place in the metal world. In March of this year Body Count released their sixth studio album ‘Bloodlust’ via Century Media. The album has star studded guest appearances by appear on the album are Max Cavalera, Randy Blythe and Dave Mustaine. The band has played very few dates since the release of the album, but we were fortunate enough to see one of their only U.S. performances at this years Chicago Open Air.

MARTY FRIEDMAN, THE FINE CONSTANT, SCALE THE SUMMIT In Baltimore! [Photo Galley]

Marty Friedman

Here is a short story. A long time back a young kid growing up in a small hamlet by the Himalayas had chanced upon some guitar/music magazine with Marty Friedman on the cover, on the very same day he had first listened to the opening solo of “Hangar 18”. An article in the magazine had mentioned that Marty Friedman had grown up in a city called Laurel in a certain state called Maryland in the US. The name of this nondescript city of Laurel in a state called Maryland stuck in his head, maybe it was due to the magical solos in “Rust in Piece”. The kid developed into a fan of Megadeth eventually. He had also heard of a city called Baltimore that was in a book of the Tarzan series. When he moved to Maryland from a remote corner in Asia to pursue his studies he had no real clue of how close Maryland was to Washington DC or Baltimore for that matter. And little did he know that one day he was going to cover a show by the man himself Marty Friedman in a venue located in the heart of Baltimore. The boy of course is none other than me.

Megadeth has been my favorite thrash metal band, since I discovered them at the age of 20! At the cost of sounding like a very old guy I must mention in my defense that back in the days before the internet, western music reached the developing world quite late. As an example, disco was huge in the late eighties and early nineties in the Asian subcontinent! Can you imagine that? I regretted not being able to attend the Baltimore show of the Inferno tour, and out of nowhere appeared this Wall of Sound tour. I was not sure if I would be able to attend this show until the very last moment. Thank you very much painkillers! Believe me, they do a phenomenal job of subsiding the pain associated with wisdom teeth extractions. Attending this show came with a lot of emotions and is a very personal story to me. Hence, contrary to my usual style of dedicating individual section of a review for each band, I will let this be a potpourri of personal emotions that I felt at the show. Continue reading

Review: SATAN’S DEALER – ‘Dealer Of The Gods’ [Album Stream]

Satan’s Dealer was formed in 2013 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The band was formerly known as Harbinger of the Apocalypse. This duo is made up of guitarist/ vocalist Jim Powell    (Sexual Atrocities, ex-Harbinger of the Apocalypse, ex-Screaming Afterbirth, Infliction Rate), and drummer Neil Pesch (Asatta, ex-Harbinger of the Apocalypse). The band first released a demo ‘Witch Fucker’ in 2013, this demo with songs like ‘Sex, Drugs, Rock n’ Satan’ and ‘Iron Sabbath (Black Maiden)’ proved the band’s sound was much larger than any run of the mill two man band. Like their name may hint Satan’s Dealer has lyrical content that is centered around  occult darkness, satan and drugs. When it comes to the bands instrumentation and vocals they incorporate influences from several different genres. You will hear some doom, stoner rock and even some thrash elements from the band. All of these with some other unique additions create the bands own personal style that has been forged over time. Satan’s Dealer has now released a follow up to their demo titled ‘Dealer Of The Gods’ which was released on June 1, 2017.

Louder Than Life Spotlight: BADFLOWER

*Every Tuesday and Thursday from now until Louder Than Life gets here we will be releasing an article about a band playing the festival to get you familiar with them.*

Today’s artist is Badflower.

On Sunday, October 1st, hard rock band Badflower hits the Louder Than Life stage for the first time. The band started out just 4 years ago in Los Angeles. People immediately took note of their passionate, bluesy rock performances as they received high praise for a show they played with Kongos. They released their music video for “Soap” the following year via Hundred Hand Records. The video was even premiered on Loudwire, so the band was definitely being noticed by the right people at an early stage. The quartet has played on several Danny Wimmer Presents festivals including Rock On The Range, Carolina Rebellion, and Welcome To Rockville since signing with Republic Records last year.
