State Of The Art: SURGIKILL

*This is a part of our State Of The Art series, showcasing bands every Monday from the featured state*

This month’s state is Kentucky!

Hello there mortals of the microcosm! A new Monday has dawned upon us and I can already tell most of you are already whining and frowning upon the inevitable. But, you’d be rather excited on the contrary to most of people if you’re an avid follower of our weekly State Of The Art segment. And today, I bring to you some horror laden and panic stricken death metal. From the state of Kentucky, today’s SOTA band is rising death metallers SURGIKILL. Remember the legendary Stevo de Caixao of the famed Illinois old school death metal band, IMPETIGO? Get outta the cave if you don’t and if you do then this is your jam. SURGIKILL is spearheaded by Stevo and treads along the similar lines of excruciating horrific death metal terror that his previous band were known for pulling off. SURGIKILL thrives on horror and gore based lyrical themes which are very common in the death metal genre but never old and stale, the plot and vibe is generally very dark, scary and sonically brutal and chaotic. Inspired by the Italian old-school horrors, revenge films, post apocalyptic imagery, and mental decay themes, the band successfully gels their theme and style of playing perfectly well. Heavy frenetic riffing, incessant , ruthless growling and hammering drums is what makes SURGIKILL the band they are today!

DOMESTIC GODZILLA Release “O.C.D.” Lyric Video Mixed & Mastered By Logan Mader!

Chicago based groove rockers Domestic Godzilla formed in 2001. The band has a style and sound that really melds various genres together creating this beast of a band that has gained attention all across the Windy City of Chicago and afar. One of the most recognizable elements of the band is the vocal style of singer Scott Coca. Moments pass and you have these beautifully sang melodies, by the time you blink it slams into these break neck screams that haunt your ear drums. Chicago was usually always a tour stop for national acts and Domestic Godzilla often opened for some of those headlining acts. If you had to make comparisons the band sounds like a mixture of a much more brutal Incubus with elements similar to the band Flaw, and a dash of Nothingface. Chicago natives loved the band and showed up in hoards to see them live. Unfortunately the band ended up going into a hiatus. Fast forward to 2008 and Domestic Godzilla drummer Gino Colucci is now the founder of an independent record label called Converse Records. In 2013 he was able to release a Domestic Godzilla album of previous material that includes several live tracks. The album is entitled ‘Language Barrier’. It had been almost a decade when the two founding members (Gino Colucci & Scott Coca) were drawn together yet again to bring the beast back to life. The chemistry they built together writing songs all the way back in high school helped them reform and got the ball rolling again. They started to work on new material in the studio at Converse Records in 2015. Gino has now moved across the country to Arizona and Scott is still residing in the Chicagoland area. Thankfully the technology advantages the two are still able to keep Domestic Godzilla alive, and their new material shows that no distance can dull the chemistry these two have together.

Review: CORROSION OF CONFORMITY – ‘No Cross No Crown’ [Official Video & Track Stream]

With their first release being in 1984, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY is a band who has made significance impact in not one but two sub genres of music (Hardcore Punk and Sludge). Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone at how excited the Metal community was when it was announced that C.O.C. would be reuniting with Vocalist/ Guitarist Pepper Keenan for a new album! It’s been a dozen years since Corrosion of Conformity recorded new material with Keenan at the helm. In that time, there have been rumors, whispers, and outright allegations that the legendary southern rock outfit would reunite to blow the doors off the whole damn scene again. In 2014, after nearly a straight decade traversing the globe as a guitarist with New Orleans supergroup Down, Keenan reconnected with the core Corrosion of Conformity trio of Woody Weatherman, Mike Dean, and Reed Mullin to hit the road hard. “Reed called me and mentioned maybe playing a couple shows,” Keenan recalls. “I said, ‘Let’s just go to Europe and see if it works.’ So we went to Europe and then ended up going back four times in one year… We toured for a year and then started tracking about ten or eleven months ago.” Continue reading
