The Technical Metal band Oni recently dropped my jaw when opening for Max & Iggor Cavalera on their Return to Roots tour in Tampa (my review to follow shortly). Recently signed with Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records, Oni has just announced the release of their debut album entitled Ironside on Black Friday, November 25th.

They have already grabbed much attention after releasing the single “Eternal Recurrence” and have just released a lyric video directed by Wovenwar/ex-As I Lay Dying guitarist Nick Hipa called “Barn Burner”; both which can be seen below. In the press release, bass player Chase Bryant elaborates on “Barn Burner”, saying: “Our front-man, Jake Oni, and I originally discussed including a ‘get in the pit and die’ track on the album, and ‘Barn Burner’ is that track. Musically, we went for something fast, heavy, and based around dream-like, mysterious tones. The track is inspired by a dream I had about parallel universes – I could see them all lined up like ripples in the water. A girl walked between the ripples and changed her surroundings at will. After having that vivid dream and working on conceptualizing it with Jake, the lyrics for ‘Barn Burner’ just poured themselves onto the page.” The play through videos for “Barn Burner” will be released shortly, showing the virtuoso guitar talents of guitarists Martin Andres and Brandon White and Johnny D railing the Xylosynth (this is a unique, xylophone type instrument that sounds like lightening fast keyboards!).

Hailing from Canada, Oni was formed by Jake Oni in 2014 and named after a shape-shifting, malevolent demon that spreads pain and misery of Japanese folklore with intent “to be the band I never got to see”. Ironside was produced by Josh Wilbur who has worked with Metal heavies like Lamb of God and Gojira which allowed them to get Randy Blythe’s contribution on “The Only Cure”. With influences ranging from The Human Abstract, Protest the Hero and Between the Buried and Me, Oni brings a dynamic that sets them apart from any of their contemporaries in the genre.

Currently on tour with the aforementioned Max & Iggor Cavalera Return to Roots through the 21st of October, they join Children of Bodom on their “I Worship Chaos” tour on November 23rd along with Abbath and Exmortus, whom they have played with before. Starting early 2017, Devil You Know will be taking Oni along with them for a tour of the UK.

About Odyssey

I have had a life-long love of music, but from the first time I heard Kiss and Black Sabbath with my landlord's son in Nicholasville, KY in the mid 70's, I have been hooked on Hard Rock and Metal. While my tastes in music have done nothing but expand since then, Metal remains closest to my heart. In addition, I have played bass, still play guitar and have literally 1000's of CDs/MP3s, so my knowledge is long steeped and honest. I don't buy the whole splintered, sub-genres thing and choose to like bands and music based solely on individual merits. Obviously, this is always colored by my mood, what I need at any given point and time and what is generally pleasing to my ear. I also don't like to rip any music or band, instead having an open mind and ear for it all because I have a passion for it all. It is completely subjective and in a constant state of flux. Consider me a music "nerd" not a music "snob". As an extension of this love, I hope to share this passion with everyone here and learn from your passion as well! - Odyssey -
