Louder Than Life Spotlight: EAGLES OF DEATH METAL

*Every Tuesday and Thursday from now until Louder Than Life gets here we will be releasing an article about a band playing the festival to get you familiar with them.*

Today’s Artist is Eagles of Death Metal

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, then you’ve definitely heard of the monstrous lineup at this year’s Louder Than Life.  It seems this year’s roster has just about everything you’d need to satisfy a hard rock/metal lover – the scary sounds of Rob Zombie to the more melodical likes of Incubus.  But there’s one band that brings a little something different to the table of which their drummer, Josh Homme describes as “bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals.”  Ladies and gentlemen, Eagles of Death Metal.

Eagles of Death Metal first came about in 1998, thanks to Jesse Hughes (vocals/guitars) and Josh Homme (drums), and first appeared on ‘The Desert Sessions Volumes 3 &4’.  The band slowed a bit in progress due to Homme’s success with his other band, Queens of the Stone Age, but maintained his devotion to the band in a 2008 interview:

“This isn’t a side project for me. I’m in two bands. I have musical schizophrenia, and this is one of those personalities. In brief they are amazing.”

To describe the band’s sound is a difficult task – it’s like if the Fonz and Freddie Mercury had a baby, and that kid aspired to be Elvis and formed a band. That’s quite specific, but it’s definitely not incorrect. Haha!  All joking aside though, Eagles of Death Metal are one of the very few bands that actually have their own unique sound of classic rock mixed with sarcasm and satire with a light touch of surf-rock.  Each song is full of energy, and carries its own personality – it’s something you’ll have to hear to understand.  Homme powers each song with powerful, yet simplistic drums that give the song exactly what it needs – nothing more, nothing less – while Hughes’ soft, milky vocals and overdriven, raw guitars steer the ship.

So for those of you who are planning on attending the Louder Than Life festivities this year, you’ll definitely need to stop by and see Eagles of Death Metal slay Louisville with the rest of us!  Also, don’t forget to follow the guys on Facebook to keep up with all the happenings!  Louder Than Life kicks off Saturday September 30, and wraps up Sunday night October 1.  Whatever happens in that time, you’ll just have to be there to find out, huh?  See you there!
