Chicago Open Air Spotlight: KYNG

*Every Tuesday and Thursday from now until Chicago Open Air gets here we will be releasing an article about a band playing the festival to get you familiar with them.*

Today’s artist is Kyng.

On Sunday, July 16th, three-piece rock band Kyng will be bringing their heavy sound to the masses all the way from California when they take the stage at Chicago Open Air at Toyota Park. The band formed in 2008 and released their first full length record in 2011 titled ‘Trampling Sun’. Following that record, the band was signed to Razor & Tie and has since dropped two albums on the label. ‘Burn the Serum’ was released in 2014 and put the band on the map thanks to some airplay of hits like “Burn the Serum” and “Electric Halo” on Sirius XM Octane and Liquid Metal. Judging by their sound, Kyng is largely influenced by the old school heavy metal and rock bands and will carry the torch of metal for years to come.

Kyng has been hitting quite a few of these festivals in America already, including Rock on the Range, Carolina Rebellion, Louder than Life, and more in just the last year. They are currently out promoting material from their most recent record, ‘Breathe In The Water’ (2016). Check out “Pristine Warning” from the record below. We actually had the chance to get caught up with bassist Tony Castaneda in an interview at Carolina Rebellion. You can check that out here. While mainly hearing influence of bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, lead singer Eddie Veliz’ voice has always been reminiscent of Chris Cornell. With the unfortunate recent events, I had the opportunity to see the band play a cover of “Hunger Strike” from Temple of the Dog at Rock on the Range. It truly was one of the best tributes I had seen and would have made Chris proud. The band just recently finished up a run with Fozzy and Sons of Texas along with all of those festival dates. They will be playing Rise Above Fest in Bangor, Maine a week before Chicago Open Air and also will be performing at Rock USA in Oshkosh, Wisconsin the same weekend as COA. You can purchase tickets for Chicago Open Air here. Make sure you follow the band and festival page on Facebook at the links below for updates on new music/tours and updates on Chicago Open Air.

About Low Gain

I'm just a teenager, living in Southern Illinois, that loves music in general. I love attending festivals as it feels like everyone comes together as a giant family. I also look forward to hearing new music and passing it onto the masses. In my free time I play guitar, basketball, and attend high school.
