The twelve-song album features six bass players (yes, six): including Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, Redd Kross’ Steve McDonald, Butthole Surfers’ J.D. Pinkus, Big Business’ Jared Warren, Mr. Bungle/Fantomas’ Trevor Dunn (aka Melvins Lite) and Melvins’ drummer Dale Crover swapping the drum kit for bass in the Melvins 1983 iteration. The final track on the album is a rendition of the classic “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” It shows the bands appreciation for America’s greatest past time. ‘Basses Loaded’ is due out June 3, via Ipecac Recordings. It’s been 6 years ago that Robb Flynn’s Martinez, CA house was burglarized. Stolen with the cash, jewelry, and other items were four guitars, and amongst these four was easily one of his most meaningful possession, a 1997 Washburn Dimebolt guitar that was given to him onstage at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, by the late-great Pantera guitarist, Dimebag Darrel. It’s something that holds a huge sentimental value and can never be replaced.
Last night, some six years later, it was returned to him along with an un-released Epiphone prototype.

On June 24th, Whitechapel will release their sixth full-length, Mark of the Blade, worldwide via Metal Blade Records. Reunited with producer Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Cannibal Corpse), Whitechapel has redefined who they are and what they are capable of with their new album, Mark of the Blade. Kicking off with “The Void” – which has a Slayer-esque ferocity that is perfectly suited to the band’s three-guitar attack – the songs that follow all leave a distinct impression, and by the time the rich, dark melodies on “Decennium” bring the record to a close, it’s impossible to deny the emotional weight brought to bear. Iconic frontman Anthony Kiedis, 53, was heading to the hospital, Flea told the crowd. He was suffering from ‘extreme stomach pain’ which may have turned out to be “complications from the intestinal flu” . Under Pike Skies hails from the heart of Eastern Kentucky. The band is comprised of 5 individuals with very diverse musical influences. Their sound can’t really be put into any single genre. The band has various acoustic songs that have really become fan favorites, but they also electrify things with some melt your face off metal as well. The way that the bands songs vary in sound so drastically makes their music all that much more appealing. You will never hear two songs that sound alike from these guys. Singer Brandon Leslie has this gravely voice that is different than anything else you may have heard recently. His vocals are rough yet pleasing to the ear. Backing vocals are sang by drummer and sometimes mandolin player Anthony Sturgill. His vocals are the opposite to Brandon’s, but they play off one another in perfect harmony. Bassist Tyler Coleman creates these thundering bass lines to contrast with the guitars and helps keep the tempo of the songs on track. The band is jam packed with talent as guitar players Cody Compton and Sean Lindsey are constantly picking away and even breaking out acoustic solos that will blow your mind. The song writing talent of the band is also a major contributor to their success thus far. Living in this area of the Appalachian Mountains has only fed their souls the motivation to sing their way out of the mountains and to a town near you. The band was recently showcased on Eastern Kentucky Broadcasting’s Mountain Music segment where the band played part of their song “Change” and talked briefly about the inspiration of the song. If you have yet to hear Under Pike Skies I urge you to check them out. Their next show is May 21st at 10pm in Elkhorn City, Kentucky at The Apple Blossom Festival.
(We would also like to thank Sean for sporting his Metal Nexus as well)
